What is the reasoning behind choosing crit and regen. Also, i like that you posted the pictures of your gear, but can we see your stats as well.

What about ability score. Which stat should we focus on and so on? πŸ™‚

  • January 10, 2014 at 3:58 am

I like to roll higher (DEX) so I can stack LESS Arm Pen (DARK Enchants) on my actuall character and still get my 24% Arm Pen cap reached. But imo, you can roll anything and still make a viable build with my build or any other build here. Starting roll IMO is not as important as other aspects of the build.

For skills, I concentrate on CRITICAL & REGEN! Fast KILLING & Fast HEALING!

My thought is you do these 2 things and you live longer πŸ™‚

Hey Hempy, thank you for the build. It has been quite for to learn the GF class with it so far, and I’m excited to keep playing to see how much better it gets.
I had a question I was wondering if you could answer, you don’t have your Dread Ring boons listed yet. Would you mind discussing what you picked and why?
Thanks again for the awesome guide!

I am having a blast with this so far. All of 2 weeks old, still in blues, and running my first T2s to gear up. Fun!

You focus on crit & regen. What’s your thought on the Dread equipment, go for Crit & Lifesteal? It wouldn’t help when under the influence, unlike regen, but it might give more when swinging because you focus on being able to deal damage.

I haven’t theory-crafted what that would look like. I am curious to hear what you think.

    • January 16, 2014 at 7:04 am

Not a fan of LS. I have to give up Regen to use it and it is not something I would consider w/ this build. I have considered a FULL LS build but that is to much extra work πŸ™‚ I do not like the Dread gear at all. Stats are garbage for GF. IMO!

Hempy, i have got a problem. Im using the Timeless Hero set which Enchantments. My current Power is 7k, crit 1.6k, armour pen 340, def 2.7k and deflect 1.6k. Is it an ok build or do i need to reduce my power for a higher crit? and do i need more deflection? Thanks alot Hempy/

Andurill, I run with a lot of crit on my Ion Stone, that is where my extra crit is coming from. I am not as activate in NW as I was. Currently playing other games so my responses are not up to date. I apologize to all for late responses. Contact me on my site: NoLifeGamer.com to get ahold of me with ease.

Thank you for the guide & links. I built mine around the dark enchantments (all 6’s), currently having a lot of issues. My feats & powers are strangely similar to yours, but now I see that it’s the enchantments that constantly breaking me. The life steal was great during solo missions & early game, but hitting 60 has made me nearly worthless in the dungeons. Thanks for the clarification on gear.

hempy I like this build but I am new to this game and need help to know to tank especially during dungeons I need any helpful tips

@Norros This game doesn’t actually need a tank as such. In lower-level dungeons, you’ll help gather up adds with your AoE Threat, and in some, you might kite the adds around (that’s one way to run Frozen Heart for example). In endgame – Valindra, and Castle Never – tanks are not needed. Guild groups will take anyone; public groups usually want CW, GWF and one DC for buffing.

Keep lots of pots on you, and use your Fighter’s Recovery if you have to. I don’t always have it slotted, but I’m glad it’s there as an option. The DC isn’t there to keep you healed, they’re there to buff you and keep you alive if your own healing fails. Always pot when you go low, your DC will thank you.

The devs are aware that tanks are not needed. While GF will get a boost with the next upgrade, that still won’t make them necessary, or on par with other choices. Devs have stated they know this, are looking at it, but have no concrete plans or timeline to fix that.

Having played my L60 Guardian for a while now, I differ from Hempy’s view (PvE only) in the following:
    – I think Frontline Surge has a place as a 3-pip encounter. It’s one of two AoE encounters we have (the other being Lunging Strike after the next update)
    – I think Tide of Iron has a place as a 3-pip at-will. It says “lower damage resistance”, but that’s actually not accurate. Say everyone has 24% ArPen, the soft cap on PvE bosses, so all their damage goes through. Tide of Iron will increase damage against that boss anyway – it’s more a straight damage increase against one monster than it is a damage resistance debuff. Might not be needed in high-end groups, but can come in handy.
    – I think Fighter’s Recovery has a place as a 3-pip daily. It’s an amazing way to go from zero to full health in a few seconds.
    – I think T1 Knight Captain 4-set is Best-in-Slot for a PvE GF. It gives a 60% power boost to everyone else (though not you) 1/4th of the time you use a power. This can really help melt foes and makes the GF more welcome in PvE groups.
    – I think Into The Fray has a place as a 3-pip encounter. Is it needed, strictly? No. Can you get away with 1-pip? Yes. Again, this is more about being welcome in PvE groups. Being able to run a dungeon faster is good, and 15% extra AP gain can be helpful.

I have no opinion yet on enchants. I am going to try Lesser Frost on the weapon, as it is cheaper than G/P Vorpal and creates effectively a “stun” for mobs. On the armor, Lesser Soulforged, again because cheap. There are other options. Terror can help with PvE for allowing everyone to melt things faster; Negation is a popular PvP armor choice; and I’ve even seen someone run a G/P Frost & G/P Frostburn combo in both PvE and PvP. Lots of fun choices, and there’s absolutely nothing wrong with P. Vorpal if you can afford it :).

Regular enchants, I see a lot of “HP only” advice for defense slots, for the extra regen. With the PvP healing/regen nerf incoming, I expect that might change in PvP. PvE, extra regen is always nice, and it might be better than a bit of deflect. This isn’t a deflect-GF, though those builds exist as well. That said, I don’t have a formed opinion yet, as my enchants are still low (7s) and I need to do more testing.

PvP-wise, with tenacity coming, I think we may see the end of “1 gear set to rule them all”. Start grinding your T2 PvP gear now. πŸ™‚

Weapon-wise, that there Fomorian is the best in the game for a regen tank. It’s only a hair better than a Castle Never weapon, though. If you can’t get the shards for a Fomorian, nothing wrong with going CN for the main and offhand.

When starting out, I grabbed an off-hand and main-hand from Pirate King. Not nearly as good as CN/Malabog gear, but will do you fine until you can run those.

Hi Hempy, I wanted to say thank you for the guide, there’s a lot of easy to understand information here and good links to other guides too. I wanted to ask a question because there’s something that isn’t clear for me yet, so here it goes:

What’s the stats priority for this build? I was thinking something like crit > regen > ArPen > Pwr? but I’m not sure. And about the defense, I saw you said to someone here they needed 4k defense, so that being said, do I need to focus on getting the 4k defense before I start working on the other stats? Thank you again and I hope to hear from you soon!
