NWO-Uncensored – where the real information is.

While it’s no longer up to date, I decided to put the guide back in place. Please bear in mind – I no longer play the game and will not come back playing, most likely ever – hence, I will not be answering any questions related to recent content/changes/current meta. The guide should still be useful for theorycrafting and the basic understanding of the class. Avoid bad information out there!
I apologize for the inconvinience. Happy hunting and thank you for all the support throughout the years!

My most recent videos:

Now fully updated for Module 10.5 (Sea of Moving Ice) – Vivified relic gear, Relic weapons, more details about companion gear, changes in group meta (marks not stacking anymore) and more. New entries to the guide will be marked in blue. Enjoy!

Updated – February 1st, 2017.

So basically…

Mod 6 kindly granted the GWF’s with new tools, allowing the class to regain the long lost former glory ever since. I will say upfront, the build is not cheap. Might get very expensive to an extent, but will most definitely do the job DPS wise. Please keep in mind that gear isn’t everything! You don’t need to be best in slot or geared as I am to do well with the build, all you need to do is follow the routine instructions, feats and boons and invest some time in learning your character. Feel free to take my gear suggestions and tweak them according to what you can or cannot afford – the build, by all means, is friendly to all types of players even if you’re not keen on investing too much time, energy or resources into your GWF. If you do it correctly, lead paingiver will be no stranger to you, and yet, there’s no magic to make it all happen other than hard work and understanding of the class and its core. So with no further ado:

On what we’re going to achieve

• Swift trash clearing/single target abilities.
• Up to 100% crit chance.
• Plenty of mobility/off-tanking if needed.

On what we’re not going to achieve (aka; what NOT to expect)

• Turtle tanking abilities.
• PVP viability.
• Utility/buff machines (the buff export to others will be minor).

A few more words about the build

The Great Weapon Fighter is one of the highest (or the highest) single target DPS’rs there are as for now among with SW’s. Thanks to our abilities and powers, we’re able to assist the party with AOE’s to clear the critters and trash mobs extremely fast, and of course, we excel at single target due to heavy hitting encounters and self-buffs. Elite mobs? Bosses? All of those are our primary duty and contribution. Our burst damage allows the GWF to do the job of multiple utility classes in a quicker, more efficient way. The two core ingredients for high single target DPS + AOE are high crit rate (chance and severity) and bonus damage. Buff/Debuff are also a core ingredient, on which I’ll elaborate later on. Of course none of these will be achieved without proper mechanics and decent understanding of the class and its feats.

Race choice

Since a GWF’s core abilities are both DEX and STR, the best choice for a race would be an Half Orc for +2 DEX/STR, and 5% more crit severity (which will play a big role later on).
Another good choice (and mine, personally) is human. +2 to any ability (a loss of 2 if compared to an Orc), but +3 heroic feats and +3% defense.
I believe both race bonuses balance each other out eventually, (like the extra feats are mostly equivalent to the +2 ability an Orc gets), but it’s a matter of choice. Orc is by all means superior due to the additional Crit Severity.

Ability rolls

It’s important to balance our crit chance with our bonus power as to not lose eventual damage. So, if human, roll 16 STR and 18 DEX (+2 to DEX to it becomes 18). This will easily balance out since we’re earing a 2/2 CON/STR belt.
If Orc, then basically 18 STR/DEX for max results.

We’re going to add +1/+1 to DEX/STR every 10 levels.

Why Swordmaster?

Swordmaster is hands-down the best path if you want both strong single target and AOE’s (given we’re using WMS, which is the most efficient way to take down multiple enemies at a time). Iron Vanguard is mainly designed for PVP at this point, and can be utilized for decent single target only damage (by double marking with Threatening Rush and Daring Shout), yet it counters the ultimate DPS “god” figure this build suggests, therefore why we’re going to be Swordmaster.

[Power chart for leveling]

The routine pretty much fits everywhere, either for clearing trash mobs and single target bosses. There’s hardly need to change it, but if you need a little bit of CC or healing, the options are vast (however not listed, you can swap to Restoring Strike if you feel squishy or Flourish if CC is needed along with extra damage).

Routine consists of:

At wills: Sure Strike/Weapon Master Strike
Encounters: Hidden Daggers/Daring Shout or Battle Fury/Indomitable Battle Strike
Dailies – Crescendo and Slam/Spinning Strike/Avalanche of Steel
Class Feats (that’ll rarely leave your tray): – Destroyer and Wrathful Determination (Or Weapon Master instead of WD if you don’t have 100% crit or near that.)

*An ideal routine would consist ofHidden Daggers, Daring Shout, IBS.

*Since we have 3 options of an AOE daily, you can easily swap them out according to the situation. Avalanche is great if you’re interested in going ahead and pulling mobs without dying/waiting for your support classes to heal/tank for you. I personally mostly use Slam at this point since most dailies are a waste of time and DPS as far as trash mobs go (since they die so fast), and Slam will pull the aggro to me and allow me to do a litle bit of damage without having to completely stop my routine.

[Note] – Do NOT slot Wrathful Determination if you’re still low on crit, Weapon Master will be a better option for you until you reach 100% or close to.

A little bit about my choice of encounters

Hidden Daggers – Great AOE. The charges are flexible and the damage is also decent. The 40% melee damage buff is very useful, try to use it before you use IBS or Crescendo. Must never leave your tray!
Daring Shout – Is our greeting to mobs. Great buff/debuff encounter for the party and for yourself. Generates Combat Advantage. (For more info, check the Numbers & Explanations section).
Indomitable Battle Strike – Our best friend and strongest encounter. Should be used wisely (elaboration further down the guide). or
Battle FuryCan be used for quality of life purposes (near to endless sprint if our Recovery is high enough), a nice buff to your party + self damage boosting. Can be used on single target bosses (Demogorgon, dragons, etc.) if someone else is already marking the enemy (instead of Daring Shout, check the Numbers & Explanations section for more information) and overall great for solo content/trash phases in dungeons.

Although all we want is to rush into battle and smack everything with IBS, our feats and encounters allow us to do more damage over time. Keys for correct entrance to battle and mechanics throughout:

Before you rush in, since we’re using the Relic weapons, a GWF can easily control the procs of the set bonus before the battle starts. Instead of sprinting head first into the first pack of mobs you see, make sure to jump and use hidden daggers in the air, that’ll proc the offensive set bonus immediately (since it procs on encounter use, hidden daggers is perfect due to it having charges we can spare right off the bat) and give you a nice headstart of 10% extra outgoing damage. Afterwards you can also feel free to use your Wheel of Elements as the set bonus is already used up (given how one needs to sprint in order to cancel the Wheel animation and catch the fire buff quickly).

• As soon as you rush into a pack of mobs, use Daring Shout. If more than 3 mobs around (and even if not, we still have a 25% chance since it’s feated) our Destroyer class feat will proc and start stacking, plus all the damage benefits DS gives us in addition to the combat advantage buff for ourselves and our party.

• After Daring Shout, when we finally use IBS we want it to be 100% effective and possibly high critted. For this to happen, we’d want to provide our companion sufficient time frame to get its bonding proc up (and Camaraderie stacks), thus getting us over 100% crit chance by spamming Weapon Master Strike, debuffing the mobs for our next Sure Strike spam.

• Since feated to build determination by both getting hit by mobs AND hitting mobs back (and of course Daring Shout), by this stage our Determination bar will be full, and then we can go unstoppable.

• While finally unstoppable, we’re going to cater for a properly buffed IBS for max damage thanks to Destroyer’s Purpose that’ll grant damage bonus for each stack and 20% more damage for our encounters. To make this effective, and due to our WMS feat, the following order is crucial to buff yourself properly – Mark, WMS, Hidden Daggers, and only then IBS. Only use IBS while you have stacks ready and full (10 Destro Purpose, at least 1 Destroyer). Make sure you build up to that by using just your at wills for a few seconds during Unstoppable. Please note, using IBS outside of unstoppable is negative DPS for the most part, and while it’ll get your determination up, there are better ways to get the same result. IBS, for the most part, is meant for use only during unstoppable.

*Since we’re using Wrathful Determination, very precise mechanics are required to utilize this class feat. Since we get the most amount of bonus damage when our Determination is just starting to drain (up to 12.5% extra damage), we’ll try to use the pre-IBS buff routine BEFORE we go unstoppable. That means that once we go Unstoppable we’re already fully buffed and can use IBS right away, while the Determination bar is still almost full and gives us the most damage. This routine only works after a first regular routine while in combat that’ll grant you all the buffs beforehand.

• From then on, rinse and repeat. Try not to waste time on marking/using dailies while unstoppable, they can be used after. Every second counts!

• As far as dailies go, as the current content of the game is extremely easy and mobs die fast, I’d refrain from using anything but Slam (unless like I explained above, you’re interested in pulling mobs by yourself, in which Avalanche of Steel will be better suited) just before going into combat, any unnecessary casting/channeling time will contribute to negative DPS. Even though Slam pulls quite a bit of aggro, it’ll decrease incoming damage by a little bit, with correct footwork you should be able to maneuver between the mobs and stay alive.

• Crescendo is also best when all the above is activated (aka; buffs). Try to use Hidden Daggers before every major strike, such as Crescendo and IBS. Crescendo is best used when your Determination bar is either half-full or empty, so that by the final strike the Determination bar will be full and you’ll get 25% off of Wrathful Determination, doing massive damage as you go. Always eye your buff bar to see if Destroyer’s Purpose, Destroyer and Staying Power are all fully stacked while the boss is marked before pulling Crescendo in order to maximize your damage.

A few important things that’ll help you along the road –

  • At-wills are your main source of damage and the core of the build. Use them wisely! (much more effective during Unstoppable as they are faster.)
  • Your encounters come secondary and two of them actually serve to cater and buff your at-wills and IBS.
  • Dailies can sometimes be a waste of time. For example (and this is very situational), sometimes it’s better not to use Spinning Strike and WMS all the mobs down instead as it’ll do more damage overall and be quicker. Spinning Strike is a must-use during Unstoppable, most mobs will try and CC you, hence interrupting your daily if you’re not already CC immune.
  • Foot work is important! Learn how to use your Stamina wisely, prevent from sprinting between a batch of mobs to another to maintain your stamina high enough to maneuver between mobs and avoid one-shot type attacks. Remember, no point in focusing on DPS if you’re dead, a dead GWF will do no damage!

Armor set

Best in slot – The current best in slot set is the t3 empowered Vivified Relic Headsman’s Raid pieces, they all have the exact same stat distribution (Power/Crit/Defense) which will easily benefit us for the long run. This will also drop our Armpen to the bare minimum, as such it’s important to make sure you compensate for the armpen loss via your companion or other sources. The set is obtainable from completing Fangbreaker Island. You can later vivify it via weekly Master Svardborg runs, which will improve the armor set further. If you don’t feel like empowering your gear every now and then and farming voninblood, Adamant (Masterwork) gear is once choice, with the new key changes there are multiple different pieces of gear dropping from different dungeons, be careful not to equip the utility focused ones. If you must, go with the more stat focused pieces such as Jarl’s Gaze, Historian Regalia, Survivor’s Wraps, etc. They are not best in slot for a GWF but can be a temporary upgrade if you’re currently wearing older pieces of gear. Keep in mind most of those pieces come without crit, that might be a problem later on, so try to keep those pieces temporary until you can get better ones.

[Please note that stat alternation is important, and while once piece can be a direct upgrade for you from an old piece of gear, the very same piece will be extremely bad for another GWF who chose to to build up their stats differently, yet is following the same build. How is this possible? While the final result will often be similar, playing with your stats to get a beautifully organized result is not easy. You will find yourself alternating between pieces of gear often, and it’s enough to follow my suggestions but do one or two pieces wrong to completely fail altogether and lack important stats such as armpen. My way of using my gear to complement the rest of my build is unique to my views as a player – as long as you, as your own person, get to a similar results in your own way and your own puzzle pieces – you’re doing it right! The build and gear suggestions are meant to give a general outline to help the GWF playerbase out.]

Alternatives – These sets take quite some time to achieve, so in the meantime, if leveling between 60 – 70, you can use the pieces of armor you get while doing the Elemental Evil campaign. Delving into 70 dungeoneering, you can mix between the Raid and Assault t1 and t1.5 sets, try to pick relevant pieces for your need (if you lack armpen, then armpen comes above all. Remember, you’re doing absolutely nothing compared to your potential without the sufficient amount of Resistance Ignored, which should be 60%), and of course, critical strike. For tier 2 equipment you can go for the Elven Ward set. (You obtain it by doing T2 dungeons, gaining Protector Seals and buying the pieces from the vendor in Seven Suns Coster Market.)
As far as Underdark goes – Dusk and Drowcraft are valid alternatives for Dragonflight (the next best if you don’t have Adamant or Relic gear) if you can’t obtain it, pieces with crit and power are a priority.

Weapon and Offhand

Best in slot – shall be the artifact set, in this case Headman’s Greataxe (+the sure strike/WMS bonus, I change mine frequently) and it’s matching offhand Headman’s Swordknot. As far as the offhand stat increase and class feat of choice go, choose Wrathful Determination (or Weapon Master if you’re not using WD as of yet) and Combat Advantage for stat increase. The set can be obtained via Sea of Moving Ice (you initially get them in their relic fashion, after which you need to restore them) and upgraded via marks from Svardborg/Master Svardborg.

Alternatives – While leveling, you can use either Dragon Bone weapons or Ensorcelled Mulhorand weapons. If you don’t have the funds to get either, just normal weapons are fine. After finishing the Spinward Rise area you’ll obtain the Elemental Fire weapons. It’s recommended to use them in the meantime (since getting the Twisted set takes time), however – refining them to max is not beneficial and they can stay at epic level at most.

Best in slotDemogorgon’s Girdle of Might to complete our Orcus set.

Alternatives – You can simply wear whatever, the Lostmauth set is fairly cheap these days and should serve you well until you can get your hands on the Orcus set.

Best in slot +4/+5 Ring of Brutality / +4/+5 Ring of Rising Precision / +4/+5 Ring of Rising Power / +5 Greater Ostorian Ring of Dod

*Note (about the Underdark rings) – Ideally, a combination of Ring of Brutality +5 and a Ring of Sudden/Rising Precision would benifit most GWF’s, but If you reach over 100% crit chance without the crit rings, feel free to change the ring for a Rising Power +5 or +5 Greater Ostorian Ring of Dod.

Alternatives – 2x Elemental Alliance Assault rings, or any of the 2x slotted rings from Jewelcrafting (either armpen or recovery, whichever one that complements your stats).

Best in slot
– We’ll go for Baphomet’s Infernal Talisman, again to complete our Orcus set.

Alternatives – You can go for Elemental Alliance Assault Necklace in the meantime, recovery is never bad in addition to power. Or again, the Lostmauth’s Hoard Necklace to complete the set until you get your hands on the Orcus one.

Weapon and Armor enchantment

For weapon a Vorpal is the best choice for us by far up to 100% of our hits in will crit, severity is important for increased DPS. For armor you can easily go with a simple Soulforged, or if you can afford a well ranked Negation (+ confident you’re not dying easy).

Ugh, why switch to the Orcus set? – So here’s the thing, those who know me or followed me and my guide for a long while, know I was against the lostmauth set as I believed it was overpowered and did not work as intended, resulting in me even refusing to use it for 3 months until I had no choice but to switch in order to remain competitive. I welcomed the fix to the set as it allows everyone and me in particular to have more flexibility. We don’t need the 100% crit chance anymore, it’s nice to have but not necessary as we don’t depend on one artifact set to be 30% of our damage, hence why I switched out Weapon Master for Wrathful Determination. As far as numbers go, the Orcus set is around 10 – 15% (all variables considered) more damage then the post-nerf Lostmauth set, despite the loss of valuable stats. If you’re unable to afford the switch, the Lostmauth set is still a decent choice, however not BIS.

I heard the Mod 11 wepaon sets are better than Relic, should I really farm Svardborg right now or just drop it and wait for M11? – Yes, you should farm the Relic weapons! As stated by the devs, the new weapon sets are supposed to be flavor, weaker versions of the Relic weapons, while the weapon damage increase from Twisted is exactly the same for both Relic and Mod 11 weapons (and this is where all the damage increase actually comes from), the Firesoul weapons (the one set everyone looked at, as the bonus was overpowered when introduced to preview) actually got a serious tonedown, and for now won’t be better than the Relic set given all variables.
TL;DR – Relic weapon set is still BIS.

I went with –

  • Lantern of Revelation/Heart of the Blue Dragon – Crit/Armpen/CA or Crit/Recovery/CA
  • Shard of Orcus’ Wand – Power/Movement/AOE resist
  • Wheel of Elements (Primary!) – HP/Power/Stamina gain + 30% more damage over 28 seconds (Fire buff).
  • Sigil of the Controller – Power/Crit/Control Resist

*You may switch out to the Lantern as primary when the scenario justfies it (wise to use it in Tiamat, DragonFlight, etc. since it it’s a shared damage buff and not just personal.)

Augment – I believe every Ioun with 3x offense slots shall be best for a GWF. Radiance, Might, Black dragon, etc. This is a valid option if you can’t afford bonding runestones or you have no intention of getting your character geared too much.

Bonding Companion –

The Fire Archon is the perfect wife! Why? There are multiple reasons the Fire Archon is best in slot for a Great Weapon Fighter at this point. Some of them are:

  • It has a very low cooldown (given Protector’s Camaraderie, it still needs to stack and you want something fast to proc it).
  • It is ranged, therefore a faster bonding proccer given we’re a melee class and it’s going to attack once we get to the mobs immediately.
  • The Archon has a good bonus.
  • It has 3x offense slots.
  • Does not die often since you’re the one taking all of the aggro for the most part.

Other noteable choices – Sellsword / Con Artist (Please keep in mind – while the 10% debuff both the Sellsword and Con artist provide is extremely powerful, that’ll come on the expense of your own personal damage as these companion are slow to proc your companion bonuses, aka Prot. Camaraderie + Friendship. Both close ranged companions also die very often due to their melee position, so keep that in mind. Same goes for the FIre Archon, it’ll provide excellent personal damage boost, but no debuff to the party. Up to you to consider what you prefer as a player.)

The key in using these companions is basically equipping normal (or above) bondings in their Runestone slots. Those (r12’s) provide 95%x3 of the companion stats to you in combat. This requires a slightly different playstyle, you have got to be aware of your companion, make sure it’s not left behind, not too far off or dead for too long  (you can always use Liira’s Bell to res them).

My current companion gear:

  • 1x Ring of the Loyal Avenger. 1x Offense, 1x Defense. +652 Power/+652 Crit/+435 Armor Penetration. 1x Brutality Enchantment, rank 12 (offense) / Azure Enchantment, rank 12 (defense).
  • 2x Ring of Adorable Bites. 2x Offense. +521 Power/+348 Crit. 4x Brutality Enchantment, rank 12.

Other companions:

Epic Erinyes of Belial – For 10% extra crit severity.

Epic Cambion Magus/Blink Dog– 10% crit severity or 5% CA damage.

Epic Air Archon –  or +5% to any target not at full health (0.5% more because we have the fire archon).

Epic Siege Master – for +4% increased damage.

Current Enchantments on the companion gear – 4x Brutals (Offense) / 2x Azure (Defense).

*Note (about the companion gear) – A nerf to the Loyal companion gear is subject to happen soon once they come back to the game (since the Gateway got shut down). Depending on the scale of the nerf, I’ll make additional changes to my companion gear. There’s new companion gear coming with Mod 11 that should benifit all those who never got a change to get their hands on Loyal companion gear and the Adorable Bites. The new companion gear will have the same stats as Adorable Bites at +4 level with 2x offense slots.

For Xbox/PS4 playersYour best choice at the moment is Fangbreaker Island rings! Especially rings of Dod (Power/Crit) of either +4/+5 variety, they should suffice until Mod 11 drops and you can have decent companion gear via the new content. If you don’t have access to FBI as of yet, any rings with 2 slots (via Jewelcrafting for example, power/armpen or power/recovery) should do.

Why not Underdark Rings?I’ve been testing for a couple of months and while the combat time might not be long these days (since we’re dealing insane amounts of damage), Underdark rings are providing high burst damage for a period of time, but low sustained damage. I find sustained damage more suitable for my playstyle and my GWF, and while I can’t argue the sudden rings work better for other classes, I did not like a Brutality ring in my setup. If you’d like to experiment with the Underdark rings, my recommendation is to slot just 1 Sudden ring of either power or crit according to what you’re lacking, anymore than that with the FIre Archon is a waste and will gimp your damage (Rising rings are not an option, the Fire Archon does not excel at proccing them and by the time it gets full stacks everything will be dead).

Starting Mod 9, mounts got added value and can now provide quite the DPS boost if you utilize them correctly.
For the Insignia bonuses, I went for Protector’s Camaraderie, Friendship and Assassin’s Covenant.
The Protector’s Camaraderie/Friendship bonus stacks very quickly (since my companion in particular attacks very fast), is not dependant on anything I do (since I’m very busy perfecting my own routine) and is quite passive. It grants an additional amount of around 10k power overall and a very nice amount of Defense with it. Going with 3x Camaraderie and 1x Friendship will grant you a little bit more stats due to the nature of the stacking mechanic of these bonuses.

Assassin’s Covenant can be extremely benefitial depending on how much Defense you have. With maxed out guild boons and R12’s, it’s an addition of ~2k power and works in synergy with the Camaraderie/Friendship bonus.

List of mounts I’m using – Guard Drake, White Tiger, Giant Crab, Medium Black Horse, Bay Zakharan Horse.

Combat PowerThe current BIS Combat Power is the Tenser’s Transformation. If you don’t have a Tenser’s just lying around then don’t sweat it, it’s not much of a significant boost mainly because the channeling time is quite long already and you might have a hard time to combine it within your rotation without having to stop it mid-combat, thus resulting in loss of DPS. The best way to utilize this Combat Power is to use instantly after entering combat, just before engaging in actual combat.

Equip Power – This varies according to what you have. My personal recommendation is either 4k Recovery from the Tenser’s or 4k Power from the Blackice Warhose. As opposing to popular belief, the 4k from the Imperial Rage Drake isn’t needed and you can easily skip it as reaching 100% crit is not much of a problem once you have r12 bondings and proper enchantments on your companion. You can always take lesser versions of recommended bonuses, however I don’t believe 2k Recovery is anywhere as good as 2k power, so you can easily just take the power instead in the form of Guard Drake, Heavy Giant Spider or Heavy Twilight Nightmare.
If you’re undergeared and still lacking mass amounts of Crit, feel free to take a Crit mount such as Heavy Howler or Rage Drake.

Offense slot – Azure Enchantments/Brutal Enchantments
Defense slot – Azure Enchantments
Utility Slot – Dark enchantment/Hoards/Fey blessing.

[Note #1] – At first you’re going to have to balance your stats a lot, will lack a good amount of armor penetration and will need to have dark enchants in your offense slots. As your gear improves you’ll gain more arpen and can begin swapping the darks for azures. Keep in mind the game changes often and you’ll find the need to periodically re-balance.
[Note #2] – If you’re undergeared, I still recommend stacking HP rather than Defense. Since Defense stacking goes along very well with having a Trans Negation (which, let’s be honest, most people don’t have), your survivability might be in jeopardy, therefore unless you’re very confident of your skills and you don’t die often at all, feel free to ditch the Radiants for Azures as they provide extra power in addition to maxed out damage resistance in combat.

Power – While we don’t invest in this stat heavily in a direct way (except for Brutals, pieces of gear and artifacts), it’s still important and a healthy amount is needed. Endgame goal should be around 2 times your crit pre-buffs. For lower geared players (under 3k), try to not stack crit to a point you have no power or crit severity to support it, a ratio of 1:1 or slightly higher power is healthy in that point.

Critical Strike – Our best buddy in the build. We will work to stack as much crit as we can from gear, enchantments and companions to eventually reach 100% chance in combat to make the build viable.

Armor Penetration – Post change to the Orcus set, you may be a little bit short with your resistance ignored. At this point I choose to rely on my companion to complete the missing margin of Resistance Ignored for me, if you want to play it safe then you can always have around 50% on your character itself and let the companion complete the rest up to 60%. Entirely up to you!

Recovery – Since I run Battle Fury quite often, I found Recovery being great at a decent rate since it shortens the very long cooldown of the encounter. +4k from the Tenser’s Disk bonus it should be around 6 – 7k, yet these amounts are optional and fit my personal playstyle and will be switched often according to what I’m doing.

Combat Advantage – Since Daring Shout will generate flank for us, this is an important stat for increased damage. Around 1k should be enough for 8 – 9% bonus damage.

Defense – We’ll have a very high amount of defense that should result in around 60% damage resistance pre-buff (that would be around 20k Defense at BIS including guild boons).

Regen – Not really something you need for PVE. If you have jewelry on your augment and have some extra AD, +100 regen kits will contribute for some incoming healing, not more than 1 – 2% though.

Deflect – Not needed for PVE whatsoever.

Life Steal – Depending on the situation, lifesteal can be great for a GWF. As a fast attacking class, we can regain health very quickly using a high amount of LS or stacking it. I often switch around between the defense and lifesteal guild boons depending on the party, if there’s no healer or the heals are insufficient this will help the GWF protect themselves and be less dependent on the support classes.

*Powerful Challenge is a major key in this build to build up our dps. Both of the options to get to this feat (Scale Agility and Unstoppable recovery) are decent. I personally like my deflect chance higher, but if you’re feeling squishy, 5/5 in Unstoppable Recovery can also do.

– For non-humans –

[Note] – The missing point could easily transfer to Weapon Mastery instead.

[Note] – Unless you have reached the armpen cap of 60%, refrain from choosing both the deflect boon from Dread Ring and defense from Tyranny of Dragons. Once you have though, choose the defensive boons.

[Stronghold] – As for guild boons, since I’m the GM of my guild our choice of boons was convenient for the guildies and for me as well, yet the good boons are quite popular in most guilds, hence why I don’t believe anyone would have a hard time finding a guild with the best ones. BIS boons for this build would be +8k power (according to my testing, it’s similar and slightly inferior to +15% crit severity at high rates of already existing crit sev) and +8k defense.

Numbers & Explanations

In this section I’ll elaborate on how certain powers and feats work to provide more insight for players who are interested in knowing how the class works in-depth.

Daring Shout (Encounter) – The mark caster gets 20% damage automatically on the marked target + 15% more from Powerful Challenge + 2% debuff on the initial DS effect + 15% base CA damage + the amount of % bonus damage you have + 8% to allies + CA + bonus CA damage to allies.
Total (personal) – ~62% extra damage.
Total (allies) – ~33% (in both calculations the assumption is that all party members have around the 10% bonus CA damage from the stat alone, not including companions).

Hidden Daggers (Encounter) – the 40% damage buff applies once, using Hidden Daggers more than once in a row is unnecessary.

Destroyer (Class Feat) – 36% base + 6% from the feat = 42% increased damage total.

Wrathful Determination (Class Feat) – 25% damage at full bar, once it starts draining it drains from 12.5% damage down to 0 when the bar is fully drained.

Weapon Master Strike (At-Will) – 30% debuff for Sure Strike, 10% debuff to encounters (Staying Power).

Student of the Sword (Feat): Dispelling a popular belief – debuffs in Neverwinter do NOT count towards your Armpen. Debuffs are a different layer. So, in this scenario, assuming you have 60% resistance ignored and you’re attacking a Polar Bear, you will shred their armor down to 0 (the Polar bear for example does not have 60% resistance, it has less, but even if you have more armpen than its resistance, you will never shred more than the minimum). Now that the monster’s DR is down to 0, your Student of the Sword debuff get into effect and will take the monster’s DR into negatives, in which case it’ll be -5% and act as a damage multiplier instead.

Mighty Blade (Feat) – Only works with powers that have the ‘burst’ tag on them, does not count for any of the other AOE’s we actually use.

Why don’t you spec into Battle Awareness? – with my amount of base power the feat gives me ~9k power, which in reality is around 10% actual damage increase, the uptime of the daily does not jutify 5 points in it especially since Student of the Sword is a 5% damage multiplier with no conditions other than crit which is A. passive B. you get all the time as you have 100% chance in theory. Even if Battle Awareness was better than what it is, you need some sort of solid AP gain to ensure it’s worthy, in which case you’ll be losing offensive stats no matter how you do it (either by investing in Recovery, replacing your active mount for a Snail or your primary artifact back to a DC sigil).

When should I switch Daring Shout to Battle Fury? –  When somebody else marks for you! Due to recent findings (full credit to @michela123 and everyone involved in the PVE effectiveness spreadsheet), it appears marks from different sources (i.e. GF’s and GWF’s) no longer stack. As a result, it changes the group meta, and if you have a GF that reliably marks for you in the dungeon/trial, you can drop DS and slot Battlefury instead. I still recommend using DS in trash phases if the GF won’t slot Enforced Threat or if there’s another GWF marking (DS only marks up to 5 enemies), in boss phases make sure only one person marks to increase effectiveness.

Final Stats

(With a summoned companion/not in combat)

(With a summoned companion/In combat + a stack of Companion’s Gift + Protector’s Camaraderie)

(Lifesteal and Regen increase are a boon proc, feel free to disregard)

And there we go! Hope you enjoyed the build. I would appreciate feedback of any kind. I apologise for any mistakes done (mainly language wise. English is not my primary language) and would like to thank my super supportive guild – ?The Holy Crusaders?. Special thanks to my dearest officers and best friends in-game and out for making elite life possible – @jeffslider (the most awesome DC, go check out his guide!) @archangelzorak01 (the most amazing TR ever, I’m not worthy of the talentz).

This is a superb build for the gwf, actually while farming 60 before any new mods came out, I followed Lazalia’s high crit build, and now ive kinda been on my own, but looking at your build, you seem pretty on par with her… by far you and Lazalia have the best built gwf’s

  • January 18, 2015 at 2:34 pm

why u use armor specialization? .. it’s a bugged feat .. this feat give u 0.1% or 0.0% dmg resist… 3 wasted point.. 🙂 .. put 3 point on constitution focus 🙂 …. u use daring shout but to use the most of its effect u must net on Intimidation.. or u can use roar but u need to use relentless battle fury… 🙂

build for gwf dps/tank(hp)IRONVANGUARD is —->http://nwcalc.com/gwf?b=cn4:13ydj4:13ydj4,13iix3i:100000:1vu500:15u0u0&h=1&p=smr

Full dps IRONVANGUARD —-> (dragonborn races)

    Roar build dps SWORDMASTER—->

  • April 7, 2015 at 4:29 pm

Thor, none of these builds are relevant today since Roar got nerfed to the ground, half the damage, no more daze. Tank GWF is such a bad idea don’t get me started, intimidation is done. IV is also the counter dps path and is superior for PVP alone.
Daring Shout is awesome if you understand its benifits, if you don’t then don’t use it 😛

Updated guide version is here –

Has a few changes in boons/companions.

Hey quick question. For your previous mod 5 build you were using Avatar if Wars Scale but it looked different compared to the default version that I see. Did you use an appearance change on it or didbitbjust look different because of the shirt?

    • April 21, 2015 at 4:32 am

Hey! First of all I have two Emperor pieces underneath, so that’s practically naked 😛

(you can see the old version here – http://i.imgur.com/mBMoZBp.jpg)

And the rest looks different because of the dye. It’s the Masquerade dye from the Halloween event, it dyes my current outfit as well.

Is there a way we can view the older version of this build? I was in the middle of doing a build and then the article changed all of a sudden. I was in the middle of fixing my feats.

    • April 21, 2015 at 4:33 am

Thanks to good ol’ doctor google, I found the old version somehow. Sadly I forgot about the Xbox players, but thanks for reminding me, I’ll make a proper copy of the old build to the new guys.

Great build i’m on xbox… i used this when i first hit 60 and was farming tier 1… i was curious about IV since i had only done SM based on this build. I feel more of a tank and can live longer with IV but i feel like more DPS i guess with your SM build… with the updates to elemental evil do you still stand by the fact that I should respec to this SM build again? I just want to feel useful in PVE and feel i don’t really know where i fit… Thanks again for your help

    • April 23, 2015 at 1:27 pm

Well, as mentioned in the build itself, IV’s only strong suit is Frontline Surge, and I’ll be blunt – it’s a crappy encounter, with crappier damage. It’s a very good paragon path for PVP, yes, if only for Threatning Rush being a gap closer. So yeah, SM all the way 🙂

  • derek
    April 23, 2015 at 6:12 pm

I understand your point I’m on Xbox so still learning builds and how to play… Do you not feel squishy stacking ur rebuffs on a so gle target with no great way to get distance and reengage… Againim learning to play but ATM in 8300 t2 dungeons even if I’m on boss or add duty I can disengage and then threatening rush in.. Then front line, restoring strike and IBS, then sprint and reengage … I guess I wasn’t playing your build right?

    • April 23, 2015 at 6:27 pm

Could be. The mechanics aren’t always clear when you read them, sometimes you gotta see them live to figure out how it works.

Daring Shout on its own is a huge DR buff, it tanks you up beautifully, no need to skip the encounter, the whole point of the build is the DS mark, no other.

Here’s a vid of me running elol (Excuse the lack of sounds, there’s sound but super low and my visible lag ingame) with my guild during mod 5, nothing special, but might give you a visual idea of the correct mechanics. I am very strict with it, so it’s easy to learn.

      hope that helps 🙂

        April 23, 2015 at 7:02 pm

Gotcha OK I see you now… No flourish tho restoring strike? Was that for that dungeon only? I know u mention they are interchangeable sorry for so many questions just want to know what to do when it comes to bring useful and so I can do CN and the new 70 places what that launches for us Xbox folk

        • April 23, 2015 at 7:24 pm

That’s cool, I’m here to answer. Restoring was a must back in Mod 5 and especially in elol, mobs hit super hard and you gotta sprint a lot, so yeah. Flourish is a better option for dps though, I used it very often. For CN I ran not so fast as a third encounter though, lots of trash to clear.

Are gwf a Lil better in mod 6 with the boosts to damage and boosts to our baseline aoe at wills?
I was kind of debating making a cw or something if gwf keep kind of getting overlooked in parties and people prefer a different DPS class

        • April 23, 2015 at 11:13 pm

Can’t reply to your last comment – but GWF’s are top damage dealers in Mod 6. CW’s are reduced to controlling and can no longer out dps a good gwf, which is fun. We got a new AOE encounter that buffs things up, plus 12.5% more damage to aoe powers feat.

what are some gwf powers that are exatly AoE? (Ex is IBS an AoE)

          • April 24, 2015 at 12:14 pm

For Chris – I can only tell you what powers are SUPPOSED to be aoe, but during my testing times on preview seemed like only some were. Anyways – Roar, Mightly Leap, Not so Fast, Hidden Daggers, Wep Master Strike, Wicked Strike, Spinning Strike. Avalanche of Steel, Slam, Punishing Charge and Grand Fissure.

Hey Lia, thoughts on the overall damage buff and difference of using daring shout and following that up with of course our at wills and encounters vs using battle fury? I know we don’t gain as much determination but we get a solid damage buff just looking at options

Right now, at level 27, I’m bottoming dps in skirmishes using this build. Although I can live longer.

If I could only use 3 encounter powers and 2 dailies, which ones would you suggest? As for at-wills, I’m sticking with Sure Strike and Wicked Strike.

Until I can get enough Astral Diamonds to afford the Avatar set and make it through the campaigns to get the Dragon gear, what do you suggest as a starting place once I hit 60 that’s cheap (as cheap as can be expected, at ;least)?

    • May 2, 2015 at 11:04 am

To be honest, it’s hard to say “using a build” when you’re just 27, you don’t have the key feats/encounters yet to make things work. Leveling doesn’t matter, plus I said this before – this build isn’t magic, it’s all about timing, knowing your stacks and the class, to move a lot, and be as active and careful as you can during a fight. Leveling doesn’t matter really, you can easily use whatever, it’s just quests. SS and WS are fine, not so fast, mighty leap and flourish once you get there will be fine til you get IBS and the rest of the good stuff. Spinning strike for a daily and avalanche for a second. You can skip straight to t2’s. Find a good guild, gear yourself in blues to get 8.3k and start farming t2’s right away, there’s no worthy GWF t1 set worth the time or the AD.

    May 15, 2015 at 3:26 am

Can you show updated feats for Xbox one I Tryed to follow but the icons are different for (INSTIGATOR) (DESTROYER) & (SENTINEL) PARAGON and I am confused

    May 15, 2015 at 6:49 pm

Yes I missed it sorry about that I’m level 60 half Orc wearing all avatar of wars helm… Would you recommend me switch to human race for better out comes?

    • May 22, 2015 at 2:09 am

Sorry for the late reply. As for the answer – not really. As mentioned in the build, Orc is slightly superior, I just don’t like the looks 🙂

    May 22, 2015 at 9:32 pm

the “effectiveness of defense” given from armor specialization feat means increase by that amount in defense, or something else?

    • May 23, 2015 at 8:21 am

It means that if X defense gives you Y DR, with the feat X defense = DR+3%. Since both Defense and AC contribute directly to your DR. The feat will NOT show on your sheet, but it’s been tested and proved working, no worries.

I have to know, and please don’t get mad, but I’ve also been checking out Lazalia’s High Crit Build. How does yours compare and how do the numbers differ? Is there something that your build does better? I’m trying to see which build is more improved and main it for a while. Once again, I don’t mean to offend, just trying to get all the information I can.

    • May 23, 2015 at 8:58 am

No worries. I was always in favor of the off-tank Sentinel way in addition to full Destroyer, I still believe it’s the best, most viable option for me and I am very satisfed with the results. With current lostmauth set being overpowered and ridiculous, my DPS is now inferior to his by a good margin of 15 – 20% simply because I refuse to use it. I prefer my DPS legit and not affected by the OP trend of the mod, unless, as I have stated in the actual guide, developers will admit to it being intended. I believe you can reach great results without a monstrous budget using my build, for which I presented alternatives as opposing to the best in slot options. I encourage players to try more than one option to excel. I respecced countless of times, I always test out things in order to do better, learn more, achieve more. I fully respect my colleagues, but then again I’m also fully confident of my choices. Hope that helped 🙂

    • May 29, 2015 at 12:00 am

    May 28, 2015 at 2:27 pm

Lia, its impressive character as hell. but i have to tell ur build is useless 99,999% players. u combine your eq with stones against feats and boons that complement it. still, grats on character.
low lvl players cant look on build through top lvl eq, pets, enchants and runestones.
buts great you share your char with us.

    • May 29, 2015 at 12:02 am

Hi! I have to disagree on this. I stripped my toon down on preivew and ran a couple of things with average gear, half the crit, power, etc. It’s still super viable without min/maxing, and the results are great. I take the word of my guildies/fellow players with a lott less gear and they report the same. It’s working, and it’s awesome, BiS or not 🙂

    • June 13, 2015 at 10:24 pm

I apologize, apparently I forgot to mention how you can get the set. You can buy it with Seals of the Protector, obtained by completing T2 dungeons such as ECC, ETOS and GWD. You can buy it from the old Drake seal vendor. Chest piece for 600 seals, rest for 400.

great guide! ;p There is one thing i think you didnt cover or atleast I misssed it. You show powers for lvling but not for max lvl. for instnace on your link you didnt even pick hidden daggers but u seem to constantly use them ;p I just wonder what 5 abilities get to IV rank.

    • June 16, 2015 at 8:59 pm

Thanks for the feedback. Sadly the NWcalc site is not allowing rank 4 powers to be added, but it should be obvious, each and every power I mentioned I use should be rank 4 eventually, they’re all important.

  • George
    June 24, 2015 at 11:37 pm

Hey Lia! Love the build. Seeing that The Rise of Tiamat is coming out this month for Xbox, I wanted to make my human version of this build into a Dragonborn. Would I stat roll it similarly to the orc stat rolls? Or keep the human ones? And why exactly is the DragonBorn not a good choice for a GWF (I’ve read this a lot)

    • June 25, 2015 at 12:27 am

Hey 🙂 Dragonborn is just a bad race. I would strongly advice against it. The +3% power/crit bonus is a proc, and for endgame stats it represents near to nothing that’ll benefit you (really depends on your stats, but say you have 11k power or so, that’s not even a 1~2% bonus damage). And since that bonus is near to non-existent, you’re going to pick a race solely for +5% incoming healing, and that’s just not worth it. Hope that helped 🙂

      • George
        June 25, 2015 at 2:52 am

I just thought of something else I wanted to ask. I have the Avatar of War full set, but I still feel extremely squishy compared to having the AoW helm and armor pieces and draconic arms and boots. What could I be missing?

        • June 26, 2015 at 5:23 pm

Well, your choice. AOW set bonus > any 2/2 or any other set. You lose signifacnt DPS if you don’t go with the full set. You’re not supposed to feel squishy, just gotta play right, you’re fast on your feet, don’t facetank everything, manipulate mobs and run around them in order to avoid incoming damage. Draconic is a complete waste of time, worst sets Cryptic ever invented.

  • ArkHunter
    June 27, 2015 at 10:31 pm

hey umm i cant see that there is elven ward armor for gwf… or any “ward” armor for that matter..

    • June 28, 2015 at 12:11 am

Check collection (ctrl+j) would have solved it for you 🙂 You get the pieces from the seal vendor in PE, you purchase them with Seals of the Protector, obtained by doing T2 dungeons.

  • Zanros
    July 8, 2015 at 11:45 am

    Lia, question about the companions.

What’s the benefits of having multiple companions? I thought only the one summoned would give you stats? Don’t the other ones need to be summoned?

    • July 8, 2015 at 12:00 pm

Greetings! I’ll explain – only the summoned companion gives you stats directly, that is true. But, other companions get “active bonuses”, granting you different bonuses without being summoned. For example, the Erinyes gives you 10% crit severity as an “active bonus”, thus it’s enough to equip the companion in your active slots to get the benifit. Other companions for example, can give you stats without being summoned, those are commonly called ‘stat companions’, and they usually give +300 of one stat at max rank, or +165 of 2 stats at max rank as their active bonus. Hope I clarified it for you 🙂

Now that i am level 60 which enchantments should i use

    • July 16, 2015 at 10:39 am

As it says in the actual guide, get your armpen up to 24% then start investing in power. For defensive slots – Azures.

      • Bourneevil
        July 16, 2015 at 1:07 pm

Why azures since radiant increases health

        • July 16, 2015 at 1:24 pm

Because in Mod 5 it’s about stacking power as high as you can, and azures = defenese = power since feated. HP isn’t as important in Mod 5 as it is for a GWF in mod 6, so azures are the best choice. And no, Lathander > Seladrine. You have no use in deflect or high amounts of lifesteal above what you’ll get in endgame. Defense + Rcovery = power.

Great build looking forward to giving it a shot. I was just wondering, you mentioned that this build is expensive. DO you have a rough estimate on how much? I know prices cage depending on the market. But I’m just curious 🙂

    • August 9, 2015 at 4:24 pm

It really depends. If you’re planning to go best in slot, it’s easily several hundred millions. You can easily make this build affordable if you don’t go mad and stay on the average scale, rank 8 enchants, epic artifact equipment, legendary artifacts, etc. It can get very very expensive if you want that 100% crit chance, but if you can settle for less it doesn’t have to be at all.

Lia – ran with your guild members the other night and was told to check your build (guess I was doing low damage for my gear) and I’m very impressed… thank you very much, I’ve been told you’re the best GWF in the game and was wondering if you do one-on-one sessions with people or could help me specifically with what I have right now. How can I get into your guild? it looks amazing and the players look very skilled

    Thnx in advance!!!

    • September 16, 2015 at 3:04 am

Hey, thank you for stopping by. I do one-on-one sessions mainly with guildies I coach but that would be that. Sadly running two guilds is making me very very busy and I barely get to relax in-game. If you need suggestions per your gear you can send me a tell, I’ll take a look. To join the guild, you can visit our recruitment form in our website.

Hello dedicate myself to you through my Xbox version, I have been guided by your information on your GWF because I have one equals days came the version mod6 for us’m working to have armor and equipment but I have doubts with Sigis Artifacts, I see you have equipped Sigil of the Devoted and Sigil of the Controler me know as I get both because according to have to have 2 lvl characters 70 Additional my GWF have a rouge that if I finish the mission in both’ll just have the sigil of my character as I get the Devoted Cleric and Wizard? I wish you could understand me Haha

    • September 16, 2015 at 3:01 am

I thiiiiink I figured what you’re trying to say out lol. You gotta have a level 70 CW and a level 70 DC to get the sigils, yes. You gain access to Icewind Dale, you talk to the NPC down the bar, then back to PE to lord neverember and then you do the Vault of the Nine with each toon (both CW and the DC) to get their class sigils.

what artifacts would be best if i cant get the sigils from other classes i don’t really play enough to level 2 more characters

    • September 21, 2015 at 6:53 pm

There are answers, problem is the answers are very very expensive. Anyhow, Thayan Book of the Dead, Heart of the Blue Dragon, Kessell’s Spheres of Annihilation are all good artifacts, yet won’t provide us the exact stats we need. The DC sigil is good as a primary for what it does, not for the stats, so it’s easy to replace. The CW sigil could be replaced with the Thayan Book, but you might encounter some armpen issues in the future as you’ll be overcapped eventually.

I’ve been using your guides since the day Neverwinter launched on Xbox One. Thank you for all the useful information! I was assigning new boons today, and I was curious why you chose Rapid Thaw over Sleet Skills (3rd boon in IWD campaign). Is the 400 recovery really a better choice than another 2% crit severity?

I appreciate any insight you might be able to share, and thanks again for the great guides.

    • September 21, 2015 at 6:50 pm

Hey, thanks for the kind words!

I’d admit I’ve had the crit sev boon for a long while, I was just forgetful and didn’t change it in the actual guide. I did today though, as I updated the mod 7 version. The Crit Sev is superior, yet a minor buff as the 1% recovery. IWD boons as a whole are pretty meh.

        September 21, 2015 at 6:57 pm

Oh wow…that was a quick response. And a new mod update! Thanks so much.

With how fast content is coming out for Xbox (trying to catch up to PC), I don’t imagine its worth my time now to worry about upgrading from Elven to elemental Elven. The stat differences weren’t all that much anyways, and if we’re getting mod 7 still this year, its probably worth avoiding that gear. Besides, T2s are nearly unbeatable for most of the community still. I’m fortunate enough to have 1 pieces of the Elven Ward gear already, but I think I’ll hold off on upgrading it (not that I’m remotely close since the IWD campaign takes a while).

Thanks again for the advice and new update!

        • September 22, 2015 at 6:23 am

Upgrading anything to Elemental is purely optional and defeinitely not necessary. Since I had the ice and the resources I upgraded mine, otherwise I wouldn’t have bothered. Bear in mind, getting access to the Dragonflight gear might take some time as most guilds are casual and consist of small amount of members/less resources, I would get the full Elven set just in case and not count on DF being available anytime soon. Happy hunting 🙂

            October 6, 2015 at 4:31 am

I’ll more than likely have the materials ready to upgrade my Elven Ward to Elemental Elven Ward once I have access to rank 5 black ice shaping (ahead of most players, hit level 70 the day mod 6 launched and haven’t missed any dailies). So no doubt I’ll go ahead with Elemental Elven.

Thanks to your build, I’m easily number 2 dps in our guild (that stupid soul puppet, I’ll beat him one day) and I was wondering if there was any more advice you could give in terms of combat rotation. I’ve got the main flow down and I’ve watched several of your videos, but I’m curious if there’s a certain number of times you use Weapon Master Strike or how often it needs to be reapplied.

One of the recent changes to the Xbox version has kind of hindered those of us who need to see our stacks. Our HUD only shows 5-6 buffs, and then “…” on the screen…making it somewhat difficult to keep track of our stacks properly, especially when things like soulforge and the fire bonus take priority on the status list. I was wondering if you simply tracked your stacks or counted out swings intentionally. I know I need 6 hits to stack my Weapon Master feat to max, but any advice you might have would be much appreciated.

Sorry for the long post. Thanks again for the great build.

          • October 6, 2015 at 5:10 pm

Hey. WMS can be used heavily with a large amount of mobs present (above 3 usually), once it’s down to the elite ones with the larger HP pool, you focus on them using your single target routine (WMS literally just for the buff).

After more than a year of playing, I stopped looking at my stacks long ago simply because it comes naturally to me now. I memorized how long everything takes and the amount of stacks I need for each, occasionally I look up to see if my Destroyer stacked more than once on a single target (since it’s a 25% proc). I would suggest you spend some times in Trade of Blades, hitting dummies with everything and examining the duration of each buff, becomes easier after a while.

    Hi Lia,

First, of all your build is great, good job. Second, what is your opinion on switching out the personalized adamant rings of recovery for 2 “Band of Loathing” rings?

    • September 24, 2015 at 6:50 am

      Hey, thank you!

Well, since survival is important to me as much as pure DPS, giving up 2 defense slots is crucial and I wouldn’t do it. In my state, 2 of said rings won’t change anything since I’m currently at 100% crit chance, yet for lower geared characters it’s not a bad subtitute until you get your Jewelcrafting to 25, but not a permanent replacement to 2x slot rings.

    September 30, 2015 at 3:18 am

Firstly, I love your guide. I used it on PC before Xbox and on either its still my favorite. Secondly, not that it isn’t an almost necessary enchantment but if you didn’t use a soulforged in armor what else might you use? There just seems to be so many that add to dps. Great guide, thank you for posting!

    • September 30, 2015 at 10:09 am

Thank you for the kind words! Over the years, there were times in which the power creep took over and content was no longer challenging enough to even consider a Soulforged, yet that always changes and will change significantly next mod for PC. Sadly, the variety of armor enchantment the game offers is pretty horrible and if you were thinking about DPS additions such as Briartwine, we are not designed to take a constant large amount of damage like a tank can, so any reflect enchantment or companion are just not worthy, you will not reflect the desired amount or anything to add a significant boost to your DPS. As for Frostburn and Fireburst, those are just horrible, the damage is very low and the proc rate is meh. Soulforged is important! Even from a BIS perspective (to the point I can literally tank everything), sometimes I slip and die, no one is immortal. Having to stop and revive anyone can cause a mass wipe and piss a lot of people off, as such I don’t allow guildies to run PVE content without a SF unless tankadins (and only competent ones), it’s a direct sabotage if and when you die, nobody wants to res the tank and die trying. Hope that made sense 🙂

Hey Lia, awesome build. I’m an Xbox player and have been following it for awhile now, but I have just one concern. When I eventually get the whole Elven ward set, it’s going to drop my armor pen by about 2,000. I have realized that I will be well below 55% armor pen and was thinking of putting Eldritch runestones into my Ioun stone’s offensive slots. I have a Lantern that’s legendary, Horn, Heart of the Black Dragon and an Orb that are all epic. What would you recommend to accommodate this huge armor pen loss?

    • October 2, 2015 at 11:19 pm

      Hey, thank you.
Is that with the recovery or armpen rings? Anyhow, as stated in the actual guide, armpen is above all. I had just the perfect 60% at BIS, but if you’re not bis you might need to switch some things around to get some armpen elsewhere (spare an azure or two in offense for darks, etc.)
You can either switch around some azures for darks or do the swapping on the augment instead, doesn’t really matter. I would strongly suggest to get rid of the Orb though, friendly advice 🙂

Hey are you going to be using the stronghold main and off hand artifacts or are you going to continue using the elemental fire ones. Also do you use both hidden daggers and daring shout at the same time? And should I put crit or arm pen kits kn my armor. Thanks

    • October 12, 2015 at 1:21 pm

Hi. I’m not entirely sure about the new weapons. In preview you could choose one with AP gain after using a daily and there were additional types, I’ll have to check them out and see if there were any changes to the weapons when they issue the vendor again. The current plans are to get rid of the DC sigil as primary in favor of a more useful artifact (Wheel of Elements, etc) as I have a snail now, and any other AP gain accesories will make it easier to give the sigil up. For PVE I never change my routine, Daggers, DS, IBS. This build is based upon CA and marked targets, you can’t really give up the mark. As for the kits, I used crit kits on my armor.

  • Troy
    October 12, 2015 at 2:04 pm

Do you know if the snail is coming to Xbox? And what rank are your Azures because your crit is really high lol. And yeah I noticed that the stronghold weapons were better at green then my blue elemental fire main hand

I want to know which would be the best beneficial and useful 3 encounters to slot. I play on xbox and don’t want to over complicate things. Just need the basic needed 3. Thx.

    • October 23, 2015 at 12:53 am

Hey. I tested two companions over the past few days, the results were inferior to an Augment by 2 – 3%. Wouldn’t say it’s worth to replace an augment with one, the companion (or more specifically my Archon and Cambion) died at times, were too far off or were too slow to activate powers before the mobs died. It’s not a reliable replacement as for now.

  • Daniel
    October 23, 2015 at 3:27 am

    October 23, 2015 at 3:29 am

How complicated would be able to get the armor dragonfligth strongholds? And Thanks You for the great build you have : D

    • October 23, 2015 at 2:43 pm

Hey. As for the RP question – there is no ‘easy’, RP stones is the most efficient way, try to stick to the peridots/minor resonance stacks according to pricing.
And as for the DF, I’d say being in a competent guild is the easiest way to obtain them. Usually the large, competitive guilds that’ll have no trouble and the amount of people to do 4 dragons each time + large contribution rate from the guildies and you’ll have the DF stuff in no time.

Would dragonborn be a good race?

    • October 24, 2015 at 5:22 pm

Hey, this is a comment I previously wrote in June, it’s still valid – “Dragonborn is just a bad race. Hope that helped :)”

What are your feats for mod 6? Heroic and paragon feats.

    • October 25, 2015 at 12:12 am

The exact feats you see on the guide, they’re relevant to both Mod 6 and 7.

      • Instinct
        October 25, 2015 at 12:58 am

Which exactly, you have 2 pictures up.
I am a half Orc. Would that mean I’d go by the “non-human” feat picture?

        • October 25, 2015 at 8:19 am

Paragon feats are exactly the same for both races, only differnece between my human and your half-orc is the +3 heroics I get. For that reason, I put up the non-human version of heroics I’d pick. As the note says, you can go with +5% severity instead of 1% crit (since you’ll always have a missing point, if you’re well geared and your crit chance is above persay 65%, the +1 in crit severity would be wiser.

  • Troy

What do you of a fey touched enchantment replacing a vorpal? I hear the fey touch is real good for dps

    • October 25, 2015 at 4:09 pm

If I were to use a power build with lower crit, Feytouched would be ideal mainly because bonus damage goes with more bonus damage. (Pretty much has to be Trans to be fully effective), it’s also a prefered choice mainly in PVP because it’s DEFENSIVE. As for Vorpal, since we’re based and are aiming for 100% crit chance, the crit hits are affected directly by severity, aka = the higher the severity, the higher your crit hits will go.

      • Nuno
        May 28, 2016 at 4:40 pm

What about a Lesser Feytouched Enchantment? Is it worth it for my level 47 GWF? I can get one for around 88K AD. I sure can’t afford a Trans Feytouched, much be billions of AD, not even in the year 2100! Or is a Lesser Flaming better than Lesser Feytouched?

    • October 28, 2015 at 9:02 pm

what would you say is the cap for critical strike, and what is your critical strike in combat, and what feats/bonuses give you bonus critical strike.

    • November 3, 2015 at 9:15 pm

There is no cap for crit (other than the obvious 100% chance) since there are no more curves except for armpen. My crit chance is 100% fully buffed during combat. There are no feats to grant me crit other than the heroic 3% and boons, everything is basically gear + augment.

    Hi Lia,
Firstly thank you for sharing your build with us, and the results have been amazing!
My questions are about the “mitigation” factor in Staying Power and Student of the Sword.
How does that work in relation to RI (resistance ignored)?
I’m currently on Mod 7 Xbox1 and i have the required 60% RI, is the “mitigation” from SP/SotS necessary?
Finally, regarding Vicious Advantage vs Powerful Challenge.
Is VA more viable until reaching 100% CC?
I currently have 61% Crit chance, which of those two would provide better dps?

Again thanks for the build and GG!

    • November 5, 2015 at 6:32 am

Heya. Student of the Sword, WMS, Staying Power and other feat realted debuffs (of any class), come AFTER RI. For example, if you hit a mob and you have 60% RI, their DR goes down to 0, even if you have 65% or anything above 60% it will NOT go into negatives. However, feats such as the above go beyond that 0 and start going into negatives, benifiting your effectiveness. So if I’m proccing Student of the Sword alone on a dummy, my effectiveness will be 105%, hence 5% above the 100% of their DR I already ignore.
As for Vicious Advantage, I personally think it’s a waste of points. The 5% crit chance does not matter in the long run, even if you’re way beneath the 100% cap. The increase in eventual DPS is minor and just not worth it. Both feats rely on mark (or basically CA) so you can’t even argue one is better than the other as far as uptime goes.

Thanks for the kind words 🙂

On Xbox I currently have 13k power and 10k crit and I just noticed that your not using s augment anymore ? Do you recommend me using a companion and bonding stones if so which one as we don’t have the warlock

    • November 8, 2015 at 3:02 pm

As I mentioned in my note, unless you’re BIS, close to BIS or veeeeerrrry interested in min/max, do not replace your Augment. With the above stats I imagine you don’t fall into the BIS category so I wouldn’t recommend that. A Fire Archon is not an incredibly bad choice if you don’t have an access to a Warlock. Winter Festival is coming soon, the Warlocks usually drop from the parcels (kinda rare) so you might have a chance at one.

I use it to solo dungeons easier and for when there’s no tank in the party and I serve as one and of course in PVP. It’s not really a replacement for Soulforged, it’s a very situational use.

Hey. There will be no updates til I get my stuff sorted and BIS. For now I have replaced my Elven gloves to Elemental Drowcraft, aim is to get the SH weapon set with my guildies (when they tone down the requirements, as now they’re utterly ridiculous). For people without a guild/without a lot of guildmates willing to get the set, Twisting is probably the better choice. I’ll issue an update soon enough, no worries 🙂

    • December 9, 2015 at 11:06 am

The gear was infused by black ice. The original version doesn’t say Elemental and is 140 item level, after infusion it’s 142 and has slightly better stats.

Hey Lia, I’ve got a question. I made a pure vorpal and found out that there are glitches associated with it. Apparently for mod 6 on Xbox, the 2% damage resistance ignore from the pure vorpal actually increases enemy defense. Do you know anything about this or is it not going to affect my build? It’s funny because after I started using it I got out dpsed by a 2700 gwf that only had 47% RI in a spider. Maybe he has guild boons?

    • December 15, 2015 at 10:22 am

Hi, the issue for NWPC was resolved mid-mod 6, it’s no longer debuffing and is now working properly. I have no knowledge of NWXBOX’s Vorpal still being bugged. On a side note, the 2% should not make a difference between being outdps’d or not. It’s extremely minor.

whaht can you suggest for an alternative for hiddedagger while im at level 60 just for leveling 😀 thanks

    • December 18, 2015 at 1:25 pm

Heya! There’s an entire section within the guide that gives you ideas of what alternatives you can use in the meantime while you’re gearing up. You can use your old Black Ice set for leveling between 60 and 70, I leveled with my AOW and had no trouble whatsoever (and the mobs got nerfed since, too.) The “new powers” aren’t great, so if you must spend your points til you get to Hidden Daggers I would put them into Wrathful Determination and whatever else you want. I was always a fan of Not So Fast, it’s such a fun encounter to use, and in older times without HD it was my primary trash cleaner, so that would be a good alternative til you get HD 🙂

Im at item level 3000. Just wondering when i should change a couple feat points around. Im not using powerful challenge at the moment but instead im using 5/5 in viscious advantage and 1/5 in flanking maneuvers with 0 points in the sentinel tree. Is it when i reach a certain critical chance percentage do i go powerful challenge?

    • January 1, 2016 at 8:21 pm

Don’t see a reason to spec into Viscious Advantage at all regardless of your item level. The 5% crit just doesn’t matter in the long-run, the difference between 70% to 75% crit chance is extremely minor and a waste of points IMO. I’d just switch now, regardless of how much crit you have right now.

  • Johnny
    January 2, 2016 at 1:10 am

Thanks for the reply. Im assuming changing to powerful challenge will be viable for mod 8 as well? Im currently on xbox and were at the end of mod 7.

    • January 3, 2016 at 7:16 pm

I’ve been using this particular set of 10 points into Sentinel ever since Mod 4, they’re unlikely to change anytime soon, so they’re always relevant!

Quick question, not sure if this should go in the neverwinter forums instead.. I’m completely sure that I ranked up Sure Strike, IBS and Crescendo to rank 4, but now when I check the Powers tab all I can see is rank 3. Is this a bug or did they change anything?

    January 5, 2016 at 12:43 pm

    Hey! Thanks for your guide.
    2 questions.
    1) How much you rely on your companion for 60% arpen? Not at all? 15% from legendary upgrade? or you use the proc of bonding?
    2) Whats your opinion on burning weapons vs twisted? i heard hte Ap gain has an ICD of 30secs or so

    • January 5, 2016 at 1:05 pm

      1. I currently do not rely on the armpen from the bonding procs at all, I might shed some in the near future in favor of Recovery or other stats but at the moment I play it safe.
      2. Burning weapons are 100% useless for a GWF. Dailies became a waste of time (except for Crescendo) and since my build specs into a little bit more AP gain and a snail (and to those without a snail, DC sigil), it’s not needed. It has a 30 second ICD, yes. In my utopic world, I’d take the SH weapon set over the Twisted, but since they’re not really achieveable and due to that reason most of my guildies won’t take it (and it’s only valid if 80% out of the people you usally play with got the set), Twisted it is. (Main reasoning is outgoing damage > bonus damage).

Hello! Nice guide! I wanted to ask though could i use it for pvp build? I just started playing and i wanted to know

    • January 8, 2016 at 2:53 am

Hey, thank you. As for your question – no. The build is most definitely not optimized for PVP. My PVP build is based on Iron Vanguard (although similar feats), 18k armpen, 6k crit, 23% lifesteal chance, etc. As you can see, it’s completely different than the PVE meta.

        January 9, 2016 at 3:46 pm

Would you suggest me a guide for PvP and PVE?

        • January 9, 2016 at 3:53 pm

GWF is one of those classes you can’t do well in both PVP and PVE with the same spec, it’s literally impossible. In PVE spec you’d do great in PVE, and meh in PVP. With PVP spec you’d do great in PVP and not even half the damage in PVE. If you’re looking for a good PVP/PVE experience that won’t require a retraining token everytime, you can create a Hunter Ranger, Paladin, DC, CW, etc. I can’t wholeheartedly recommend any PVE/PVP spec, they all suck at one of the branches terribly and it’s not worth it.

          • Andrew
            January 9, 2016 at 4:02 pm

What Class would you recommend for PVP and PVE the most from better to worst?

          • January 9, 2016 at 4:06 pm

Paladins nearly don’t need any adjustments at all to their build (especially tankadin, yet I like healadins way more).
DC’s if you choose to be a healer (Faithful) in PVE, works perfectly in PVP.
HR’s are all Trappers these days, it’s the way to go for both PVE and PVP despite Stormwarden being slightly better in PVE than Pathfinder, yet they’re both viable.
CW’s for last, half are going Thaum, the other half is going Renegade, both SS and both work in PVE (Also Rene CW’s are preferable in PVE IMO.)

          • Andrew
            January 9, 2016 at 4:12 pm

So if i want to deal damage would you recommend me HR?

          • January 9, 2016 at 4:16 pm

HR’s aren’t reallllly damage dealers, they do CC damage in PVE and alright damage in PVP (BIS HR’s built into armpen meta in PVP can do more). Should be fun to play though.

          • January 9, 2016 at 4:31 pm

You’re welcome~ I can guarantee perfection in PVE with the guide, but not PVP, you need an entirely different set-up for it to work. There’s only one server on NWPC, Dragon server – we’re all there lmao

    January 8, 2016 at 2:49 am

I’m a little confused. Why is your companion giving you over 60% arp and like 50% crit, I’m not sure this can work on xbox, not even in mod 8 since we do not have the companion equipment that you have

    • January 8, 2016 at 2:52 am

I get 16% crit from weapon master + offhand feature alone, the rest is the bonding procs. This is with 3 stacks, that would be 195% of the companion’s stats going directly to me and yes it would work exactly the same, it’s by design, not a bug. Sure, on Xbox you’d get lesser stats because you don’t have the avenger gear, but it still beats an augment by far.

  • Troy
    January 9, 2016 at 4:32 pm

Would you recommend the Control wizards ensorclled talisman for the companion since we don’t have the ones you have? And also I’m debating on switching to the wheels of element would that be the only artifact you’d use?

    • January 10, 2016 at 1:17 am

Pretty sure there are a bunch of companion items that got released with Stronghold, like the Orc ring and others of that type. I’ll check this wekeend if there’s any talisman worth slotting since the Ensorcelled is pretty crappy. Wheel of Elements is best for personal buff to DPS (ie. dungeons and solo content). Lantern as primary is great for mass raids (ie. Tiamat, Dragonflight, Demongorgon, Heralds, big HE’s, etc.) The Token of Chromatic Storm should be worthy as well if you can get your hands on it.

    Best build ever btw 🙂

  • Cgray
    January 14, 2016 at 2:11 am

Hello. If you’ve gone over this I apologize but what do you think of the axe beak mount with its 4000 armpen compared to the snail? I think you said that for a dungeon boss you should have about 60% resistance ignored, but would more be beneficial?

    • January 15, 2016 at 1:22 pm

Hi. The answer is no, 60% is the cap and anything above that has no use in PVE. In which case, Snail > Axe Beak for PVE.

    • Hate
      January 16, 2016 at 2:14 am

Yeah, I’d also like to know if an axe beak mount would be better than snail. It seems like it would be good to free up gear/slots for more crit/power getting to 60% easier. Not to mention just eyeballing the Disciple of War feat it seems that even if you blew past that 60% mark you’d still get some returns on power unless there’s some sort of soft/hard cap. Pretty sure this would mean hanging on to DC artifact though so not sure how it’d work out.

      • January 16, 2016 at 2:55 am

As I said, the Axe Beak has no actual use in PVE. Unlike other classes, a GWF does not need to slot dark enchantments in offense for the long run (and not even early on) to get the 60% RI cap. Relying on a mount for stats is not something I’d do even if you were to get one, you’re gonna be replacing it soon enough anyways with a better mount, hence having to rearrange all of your gear again. Out of an Axe Beak you’d get 1k power in return (25% of 4000), that’s 2.5% bonus damage you can 100% do without, not to mention the damage bonus you’re getting out of the Wheel of Elements you’re gonna have to replace again for the DC sigil. In short, again, the Axe Beak doesn’t have much to offer you in PVE.

    January 19, 2016 at 5:15 pm

Have you actually TESTED axe beak vs snail? 2.5% increase bonus damage to ALL your attacks ALL the time could very well outdamage 25% faster dailies. i dont think its something you can just write off without doing actual testing just because it doesnt look good on paper.

    • January 19, 2016 at 5:48 pm

I don’t think you understand how marginal 2.5% bonus damage is. Bonus damage is NOT outgoing damage, the actual increase in DPS is so little it’s hardly traceable, and even when I tested it through ACT there’s absolutely no difference in damage. I can say goodbye to my armpen rings right now easily if I rely on my warlock’s bonding procs with or without an Axebeak, your point is invalid here. I don’t care what looks good on paper and what doesn’t, I run the way I do based on facts, if you really want an Axebeak for PVE what’s stopping you? You don’t need my approval. Also how exactly am I getting more power from swapping rings? Replacing armpen for the same amount of recovery leaves me just where I started, another invalid point. Having dicthed the DC sigil, a sorce of AP gain will just benifit you and all that of course, until a better mount comes out, everything’s temporary anyways.

  • Purphoros
    January 19, 2016 at 5:20 pm

forgot to say you will also get 394×2 recovery from swapping back in recivery rings, that will speed up IBS and Daring Shout a tiny bit and help with AP gain…not to mention another ~200 power for another 0.5% bonus damage.

  • Purphoros
    January 20, 2016 at 4:50 pm

    • February 3, 2016 at 10:29 pm

A direct quote from the guide – “Another good choice (and mine, personally) is human. +2 to any ability (a loss of 2 if compared to an orc), but +3 heroic feats and +3% defense.”

  • Velvetlace
    February 7, 2016 at 3:32 pm

Is there substitutions for the Devoted Cleric and the Control Wizard artifacts, because I’m not levelling those two characters to 60 just to get them. :/ Unlike the Xbox who can pick up the vault quest at level 4 and get them by hitching to the King you can’t do it on October, can’t even pick up the quest before 60.

    • February 9, 2016 at 10:50 am

Eh, no. You can’t get them on level 4 anymore on PC, it was a bug and was not intended. There aren’t many subs for these, so I wouldn’t be lazy on that. CW sigil has no sub with power/crit, but can be replaced for any crit/reco/ or crit/armpen artifact (Heart of the Blue Dragaon, Thayan Book of the Dead). DC sigil has no replacement since you’re using it for what it does, not its stats. You can go directly for a Wheel of Elements and skip the sigil altogether.

        February 9, 2016 at 10:56 am

Sadly I only have 3 character slots as I haven’t purchased anymore and they are taken, I’m also a uni student so don’t really have time to level two extra characters just for artifacts, that I don’t have interest in playing :/

    February 8, 2016 at 4:06 pm

Hey so for companions you think I should not use the ioun stone? And also what gear and runes should I equiptment to my companions

    • February 9, 2016 at 10:52 am

In the guide it says I don’t recommend switching over from a Ioun Stone til you’re properly geared and got perfect bonding stones and up, until then an augment is recommended still. The gear on my companion is listed, it’s the Loyal Avenger bits (Girdle of the Striker is the name of the belt if you have a belt slot.)

Lia I need help please! With the new stable addition on Pc what would be the best combo for your mount? 4K CRIT from the imp rage drake or still ap gain from snail? and the tensor disk use? Please I need to know this thank you!

    • February 12, 2016 at 7:39 pm

Hey. I have yet to make up my mind. For the bonus power I’ll most definitely use my Tenser’s, that’s for sure. For the actual stat I’m currently debating between Power and Recovery, crit is off the table since I really don’t need anymore of that thanks to my warlock. Recovery seems like a winner so far, the 4k addition is around a 2 second CD reduction from DS and BF not to mention the AP gain and the small portion of power I get out of it. As I said though, I have more testing to go through before I can give out a final answer. Hope that helped.

Great guide, thanks! A question I had regarded PvP. You say in your guide that a slightly different build is needed. What do you run for PvP?

    • February 12, 2016 at 7:37 pm

Hey, thank you! My PVP build is extremely different than my PVE setup. 3 feats into Sentinel (no 5/5 in Student of the Sword), Armpen/Power for offensive stats (Strictly Dark enchantments in the offensive slots), Lifesteal for defensive slots. Feytouched/Negation for weapon/armor enchants, high HP, etc. Most of the boons will be defensive as well (deflect/hp/defense), etc. As I mentioned, it’s extremely different and not easy to fund since it requires other enchantments, being IV and not SM, usually halfling rather than human and other adjustments.

  • Clayton
    February 13, 2016 at 9:46 pm

This question is regarding companions. I have the ion stone of allure currently and I know you said to use it until you have greater bondings or higher with the warlock but say I get the black dragon ion with all three offensive rune slots and three ring slots, wouldn’t that give me more of what I want instead of a 50 or 65% chance to gain a % of stats? Seeing they have legendary double slotted critical rings from Demogorgon which I could use or a recovery ring slotted with azure. Just trying to see what may work best. I use your build as a reference as I have done a few things different so was wondering if you have any experience with that?

    • February 15, 2016 at 10:35 am

Pretty certain the legendary rings or any of the Underdark rings will not work in Ioun Stones since they don’t attack or can do anything (hence why bondings won’t proc off of them), so that’s invalid. R12 bondings give 95% of the companions stats, while it is a proc, the warlock procs it instantly due to no CD on its attacks. You can look at the last section of the guide and see the difference in stats, it’s a 20% increase in DPS at least and by all means superior to an ausgment with the right conditions.

      • Clayton
        February 17, 2016 at 10:38 pm

Ah ok. One more question. I was reading up on the set bonus for the artifact weapons and the set bonus for stronghold set is +2% outgoing and incoming damage. Wouldn’t that be better overall compared to possible 3k+ power if you can get full stacks of bloodlust with the twisted? I’m not great at determining the math behind everything but when I hear things like chance I usually tend to lean towards definites similar to previous question unless advised otherwise.

        • February 18, 2016 at 12:55 pm

The SH weapons are a clusterfuck to get by design. My inital decision was to get them (assuming 80% of my guildies planned on them to begin with, any less would not be worth it. You need a guarnateed 4 players in your party to make it count and actually a good alternative, so we’re talking about more than 75% of the players you play with need to own the set), but then again, EVEN if you have the Weaponsmithing MW leveled all the way up, the materials alone are around 4.5 million AD.
Other than that, outgoing damage is always superior to bonus damage, yet I’ll make a correction to the very “accurate” tooltip the Twisted has (NWO probably has the most inaccurate and misleading tooltips in any game, ever) – it’s not a chance, it’s literally EVERY TIME you hit a foe you get a stack (or get hit by a foe). It stacks up to 3.8k power, aka 9.5% bonus damage and it’s extremely easy to stack it to full. Twisted is the best choice as for now, unless they make the SH weapons literally free and you can convince your entire guild to invest RP in another set again. Unlikely for that to happen.

    February 19, 2016 at 12:10 am

Still love the guide, and has been working wonders the past few mods on Xbox. I’m curious what your thoughts are on using 2 pieces of dusk over the dragonflight. Sure, the set bonus isn’t active all the time, but we don’t need more stats for solo content. I would think the 2 piece set bonus (5k hp, 1k power, 1k defense) for group content would be worth the loss of ~100 points here and there and the 3-piece df bonus. Any reason you stuck with dragonflight?

    • February 19, 2016 at 3:13 pm

Hey. No special reason I stuck with Dragonflight, as you said yourself the differences in stats are minor, and the bonus in a party is also extremely minor for me to bother and get the Dusk pieces. Going 2/2 is a valid choice, I just don’t see a reason to bother with it myself, the content, as you said, really requires none of it.

      • BBowles
        February 19, 2016 at 5:02 pm

Appreciate the feedback 🙂 I never bothered with df aside from the boots since I was focusing on crit gear to get to 100% solo (used gear to make up for rank 10 enchants). Now that I’m comparing mod 8 gear (and am completely underwhelmed by it…) I was just curious if there was a reason I was missing to use df over dusk. Sounds like either is viable.

Copying a reply I already written a while ago about my PVP setup – “My PVP build is extremely different than my PVE setup. As I mentioned, it’s extremely different and not easy to fund since it requires other enchantments, being IV and not SM, usually halfling rather than human and other adjustments.” I won’t ever PVP as SM and I’m just not the type of person to make something ‘half-work’, I like to play 100% viable for each of the fields 🙂

        • February 19, 2016 at 3:28 pm

It’s a switchout depends on your enemy. Usually HD, FLS, IBS, RS (and sometimes DS). I don’t feat into Battle Fury but it’s viable, I just prefer another spec. I use the Water artifact weapons in PVP.

    February 19, 2016 at 3:08 pm

Awesome guide, but there are a few things i’d change

Personally I think Thayan Book of the Dead is better than Sigil of the Controller due Unstoppable. On the other hand, the sigil if “free”, right?

For BIS players, with mod 8 it’s possible to achieve 100% critical chance using brutal enchants instead of azures. Brutals will also give around 5000 bonus power (+12%~ dmg)

and last but not least, I agree with you about the wheel. I’ve never ever considered using sigil of the devoted since I’ve always thought gwf’s dailys were meh. They have its uses, but wheel of the elements with its +30% bonus it way, way, better. Most ppl i know do not like it due its stamina bonus, but I rather it than incoming healing, since it helps to get off red areas more times.

    • February 19, 2016 at 3:21 pm

I have absolutely no need in Armpen, hence why Thayan Book of the Dead has no use for me. I recently dropped my lantern for a Heart of the Blue Dragon as well, taking the risk of the companion giving me extra armpen to complete the 60% is worth it.
Brutals are also useless to me in offense. I tend to avoid multi-stat enchants. For me, reaching 100% crit chance with just 2 bonding procs is the goal, the closer I get to 100% with just 1 proc, the better. Brutals in defense slots however are a good idea since I’m switching out my Radiants these days (yet mostly for Azures, as I said, I’m not fond of multi-stat enchants, they do half the job.)

Don’t see why healing from the wheel is needed in this type of content. You almost always have a healer and you should be able to survive quite well without it. The only reason I’ll ever use it for healing purposes would be PVP, otherwise it’s purely used for offensive purposes in PVE.

      • Vlek
        February 19, 2016 at 4:46 pm

My equipments are +5 ring of rising precision and +5 ring of rising power, so I have 788 less arp than a player who uses 2 personalized adamant ring of piercing, I can solve this with thayan book of the Dead, and i’ll still have extra 212 arp that, with few others extra points from equipments, allow me to change the third dread ring’s boon from 3% resistance ignored to 3% deflect chance, not much but this extra 3% deflect is almost the same as 1.5% dmg reduction. Choosing Thayan over Sigil of controller will also give me 1000 less power which I solved using multi stats enchants (explained below). The third difference between them is Action Point Gain (thaian) vs Control Resist (controller). Unstoppable makes us immune to cc, so … I rather Action Point Gain.

About the power and Multi stats enchants:
Multi stats enchants gives, each, 140 more stats when compared to single stat enchants (that’s 1260 extra stats for my 9 offense slots), and I still have 100% critical chance with around 4800 extra power (+12% dmg).

About Heart of Blue Dragon vs Lantern of revelation (or 1000 recovery vs 1000 power)

For GWF, power is much better than recovery, since:
        – most of our dmg comes from our at-will, which are not affected by recovery.
        – Daring Shout’s mark last longer than its cooldown (no benefit from recovery here)
        – Hidden dagger is not affected by recovery, it’s cd is fixed (no benefit from recovery here)

About Sigil of Devoted vs Wheel of the Elements:

I think you got the wrong idea of what i meant.
I said that the wheel gives Stamina while the Sigil gives Incoming Healing Bonus and that I prefered the stamina (wheel) – which allow us to get away from red areas – over the extra healing (sigil) – which does not benefit us due our temp hp.

That’s just about the third stat. Wheel worth using only for its active power.

“About Heart of Blue Dragon vs Lantern of revelation (or 1000 recovery vs 1000 power)”

I forgot to say that I’ve chosen power over arp in other pieces of equipment, that’s why FOR ME, its recovery vs power

        • February 19, 2016 at 4:57 pm

I simply overlook the CC immunity since it doesn’t matter, and AP gain is also useless IMO. Lantern is armpen/crit, not power/crit. Literally nothing happens if I switch out the Lantern for the Blue Dragon arti since they give me the same exact amount of power (recovery instead of armpen). As I said, of course you’ll have 100% crit chance, question is the uptime and how long it takes you to bring it up to 100% (since you rely on bondings). My uptime will simply be higher than yours since I don’t use multistat enchants, simple as that. My base crit will be higher and I’ll be able to pull off 100% at a 75% uptime more or less. A long uptime of 100% crit > 12% bonus damage as far as I’m concerned, you’re entitled to think differently and hence you do your own thing. I’ll disregrd the power vs. recovery argument since you put it there based on a false assumption that the heart of the blue dragon is power/crit while it’s not. Also no, 4k recovery > 4k power IF you spec into battle fury and dump IBS. 7 – 8k recovery is an uptime of 100% for BF and a constant 20% for your damage, which is where I will be at once Mod 9 comes out and my Tenser’s will be 4k recovery. Also DS is not a buff solely based on the mark, its own effect (the little shields on your buff bar) are a buff on their own, they go away way before the mark does and the less CD DS has, the better. BF is also the reason I don’t need any other sorce of extra stamina anymore (wheel/kits), nor healing since I can sprint out of any AOE or just eat it due to how tanky I am.

            February 19, 2016 at 5:49 pm

Sorry to butt in to another conversation, but I had been considering removing IBS from my rotation since our at-wills are so insane. I’m close enough to end game (missing a few rank 12s and whatnot) but have 100% crit (85% base with potion – I still refuse to dump my ioun). Have you specced into Relentless Battle Fury, or are you just stacking recovery where possible and ignoring the feat?

          • February 19, 2016 at 8:04 pm

I’m still testing everything out, I’ll post an update in a few weeks since I’m leaving the game for a while. Stay tuned 🙂

Again, i’ll quote myself ” I’ve chosen power over arp in other pieces of equipment, that’s why FOR ME, its recovery vs power ” -788 arp
            -> -788 power
            -> -1000 recovery
-> -4900 critical from offense slots
-> -1400 defense and -280 power from the 2 defense slots of the both rings (i’m assuming you are using azure enchants, otherwise its -5600 hp)

            what we get?
            -> +5130 power
            -> +5130 critical
            -> +1000 arp

            -> +112 arp
            -> -1400 defense
            -> – 1000 recovery
            -> +4062 power
            -> + 230 critical chance

All the rest is exaclty the same. So i’ve proved that brutal gives u 4000 extra power with same critical chance and uptime. It’s simple, it’s math.

for some reason, some words were missing in my previous post, here it is again

Again, i’ll quote myself ” I’ve chosen power over arp in other pieces of equipment, that’s why FOR ME, its recovery vs power ”

Now, about multi stats. Using as example your very own character.
-> Exchanging your personalized rings for +5 rising precision and +5 rising power
            -> azures for brutals
-> lantern instead of heart of blue dragon

            what I lose?
            -> -788 arp
            -> -788 power
            -> -1000 recovery
-> -4900 critical from offense slots
-> -1400 defense and -280 power (20%) from the 2 defense slots of the both rings (i’m assuming you are using azure enchants, otherwise its -5600 hp)

            what I get?
            -> +5130 power
            -> +5130 critical
            -> +1000 arp

            -> -1400 defense
            -> -1000 recovery
            -> +4062 power
            -> + 230 critical chance
            -> +112 arp

All the rest is exaclty the same. So i’ve proved that brutal gives u 4000 extra power with same critical chance and uptime. It’s simple, it’s math.

          • February 19, 2016 at 8:03 pm

Your math makes absolutely no sense to me. I’ll redo – say I swapped my my personalized rings for the +5 ones and switch back to my lantern, I lost armpen, gained a similar amount of armpen, all good.
            Next, enchants – 7x Azures – 4900 crit. 6x Azures in denfese slots – 4200 (+840 power, so assuming I have 0 power, that’d be 840, 2.2% bonus damage).
            Sum – 12.25% critical change/2.2% bonus damage

Brutals – 7x Brutals in Offense – 2940 crit (almost 5% difference in chance from the above) + 2940 power – 7.35% bonus damage + 6x Azures in defense, again 4200 defense (+840 power +2% bonus damage) – total of: 2940 crit and 3780 power.
Sum: 7.35% critical chance/9.45% bonus damage.

That’s the correct math. I’d rather have the extra 5% crit chance that I DO have over you with the above setup than gaining the extra 7.25% bonus damage I could do without at the moment. There’s really no point in arguing over this, I know how to do my own math and these are my preferences.

            February 19, 2016 at 10:31 pm

            Sorry to butt in again…

I think Vlek was simply saying at a certain point brutals would be better because going over 100% crit chance is meaningless. I know personally, I’m moving to rank 12 brutals in my offense slots because even with them, I will be sitting at 85% crit base (so 100% thanks to weapon master). Your math is correct 🙂 But if that extra 5% crit puts a person at 105% crit chance, its not really useful.

Of course, I’m working from an ioun stone still since I prefer the static, reliable stats and know I’m hitting 100% crit 6 swings into the fight. Bonding companion is definitely better overall, I’m just stubborn and like my static stats.

          • February 19, 2016 at 10:54 pm

What you’re saying is only valid if you’re not using a bonding companion. Obviously anything above 100% is useless, for sure, yet when you rely on bonding procs everything is very different and uptime becomes a big deal.

          • BBowles
            February 20, 2016 at 12:56 am

            Agreed 🙂

As someone that is sticking with his ioun stone, I hit 85% crit without all rank 12s, and should be able to maintain it with rank 12 brutals in their place.

    February 25, 2016 at 5:24 pm

As far as I can see the Dragonborn now have permanent Fury.
No longer a 5% proc chance. Or am I mistaken?
Would that make them a race viable to this build?

    • February 26, 2016 at 6:37 pm

There were no patch notes about the matter so I doubt it’s permanent now (I don’t trust anything that doesn’t come directly from the devs about anything, really.) Also not quite, 5% Crit Sev is still superior even if the bonus is no longer a proc.

Thanks

on xbox? if so, we dont have the really good companion only gear PC has. to reach 100% crit chance with 2 stacks of bonding rank 12’s going, you will need either +5 rings to get the double offence slots or ring of suffering somewhere on you or your companion. if your willing to use potions/food ALL the time, you can do without them…but that gets pricey very quickly.

And can u tell the correct name of companions by which i can search them on auction house..
Thanxxxx for your help 🙂 🙂

    • March 14, 2016 at 6:30 pm

The guide clearly mentions all that. You can find the list of companions in the ‘Companions’ section and the enchantments I use in the ‘Enchantments’ section.

      • Tanuj Agarwal
        March 15, 2016 at 8:29 am

i got the enchantment section but companion names are still inappropiate..
eg:- legendary erinyes of bellial is not the actual name i suppose, its zhantarin warlock, so if i go to auction house to search for her, i have to type zhantarin warlock instead of legendary erinyes to get search result…
So i am asking what is the actual names of other companions in the slots u used?

Sorry for my bad english :p

        • March 15, 2016 at 3:31 pm

Ehm, I think you got a little bit confused.
Erinyes of Bellial is one companion.
Warlock of Zhentarim is ANOTHER companion. They’re not the same one. Legendary means their rank (aka it’s orange in my case as you can see in the picture, it would have been ‘epic’ if it was purple, etc.) You can’t find the Erinyes on the AH since it only comes from the SW pack, you can find the pack on the zen market.

Hi Lia, first off love the Blog and build, very informative. I’m going to pick up on somebody else’s question regarding companions for the Xbox one version of the game. I have the warlock active at present and have found it excellent so far, there is one problem though. Due to Xbox users not having access to the gateway we cannot get the loyal avenger companion equipment. This makes our current best talisman choice to be the gemmed elemental talisman of fire (il 122 473 crit 405 rec) which is single Spotted. There are other companions such as the mercenary and con artist which are both strikers but with equipment slots that on the Xbox are much easier to fill (3 rings on con artist for example). Have you tried or are you aware of any other companions that proc the bindings as well as the warlock but with equipment slots that are more easily filled by players without the loyal avenger gear?

    Hi there,

Excelent build/guide! The best i’ve seen. Congrats

With the new changes with the maze engine patch, CW and DC sigils are no longer an option as it seems. Any alternatives you could think about?

    Best regards

    • March 22, 2016 at 11:19 am

Not sure how you came to this conclusion? If you could elaborate, I’d be able to answer your question better.

      • EIC10412
        March 23, 2016 at 5:18 pm

I may be wrong since i’m fairly recent on NW, but it seems now that those sigils are class locked. I hope not though 😉

        • Daohor
          March 23, 2016 at 6:23 pm

They are class dependent but once you reach max lvl with a class you can then use it on other classes aswell

        • March 24, 2016 at 12:46 pm

As somebody else replied, they’ve always been class dependant. In order to unlock the CW sigil for example, you need to get a CW to 70 and run the quest. Nothing changed (rather than the max level, it used to be 60.)

          • EIC10412
            March 24, 2016 at 5:46 pm

Thank you for your time explaining this.

You were right, it does work, i’ve just tested it.
It seems you only have to get a CW or DC to lvl60 to be able to do the “vault of the nine” quest in order to unlock the sigil.

            Thanks once again, regards

    Hi there.

First of the obligatory praises for a well written guide, it truly is one of the best I have stumbled upon, if not THE best.

So basically I just rolled a GWF and felt I lagged something then viola here you explain it so cut and perfect that even a newb like me can understand then ins and outs of it. Still lvl’ing up 😀 But that’s beside the point.

But I made a mistake early on, I went and got a blink dog instead of a yeti, got the four others, 2x archon, enryis (or how ever it’s spelled) , and that warlock thingy. I was just wondering if it will lower my overall effecitiveness of the build in or will just be a minor bump along the road of little to no consequence?

Again, just love the guide still feel like I am in much better place with it now than without it.

    • March 24, 2016 at 12:47 pm

Hey, thank you for the kind words! Both companions should supply pretty much the same DPS rate, it doesn’t matter much at all, you can calm down 🙂

    Hey Lia!

I have been rocking your build since 2k IL and i have to say that it is pretty brutal, i love it 🙂 I have only one question, maybe my bad and i missed out something but i didn’t find any information about that what type of enchantments do you use in your pet equipment’s defense slot? Should i put Azures, Radinats or maybe Savages in those slots? Of course, im using bondings (r11, 10, 9) and i can’t decide which is more important during the fight: HP or Defense.

Hopefully you follow your path and continue helping those fellow GWF dudes who need your help!
Thank you for your reply in advance, and have a nice day! 🙂

    • March 28, 2016 at 7:23 pm

Heya, thank you for the kind words! I put Azures in both defense and offense on my companion, it buffs up my defense in combat and thus I end up getting power out of it.

  • March 27, 2016 at 6:56 am

How did you manage to receive the talisman and ring of the loyal avenger. I play on Xbox and the rings are available but I dont understand how people are getting them. Help Thx

    • March 28, 2016 at 7:22 pm

    Hey Lia

What you think is the best GWF Weapons Set?

Twinstet Set or Guild Weapon Set?

    Kind regards

    • March 28, 2016 at 7:21 pm

Hey. The SH weapons are superior to the Twisted only if more than 75% of your dungeon run partners have them as well. That’s very unlikely at this point, so might as well go with Twisted.

I want ask you if this build work on xbox version,it will be the same stats?Thx

    • April 10, 2016 at 12:36 pm

    April 1, 2016 at 1:37 pm

    Hi Lia,

First of all, fantastic build! I am following you to get a strong GWF too. I noticed that you were able to keep your critical chance lower than your power. How do you achieve that? Because to my understanding, power always needs to be higher than crit. is this right?

    • April 10, 2016 at 12:35 pm

Hello. Since I’m using a bonding companion with Bonding runestones (+800 power each), plus most of my gear is revolved around power ALONG with crit, naturally power will be the higher stat. Crit also caps at 100% while power does not, hence in combat I’ll hit 100% crit chance while the power stacking will add damage, in which case it’s better off to have the power higher than crit, it just doesn’t have a cap.

    Greetings Lia.

With the op coming changes to Lostmauth’s artifact set, have you made any new plans on what to get, or should we still just strive to get it for the passives the set give?`

    • April 10, 2016 at 12:33 pm

Greetings! I’ll most likely switch to the Orcus set, although I have yet to test it since I don’t have the neck yet. The eLOL set seems to not cross the 4% mark of my damage, thus the orcus will most likely be an improvement of between 6% and 10% at least.

    April 6, 2016 at 2:56 pm

Hi! Congrats for the build! I have a few questions. What do you think about the mercenary companion (for the zentharim warlock)? My other companions are Fire and Air Arc, the Eryn of Belial and the Ioun. Suggestions on what to change?

    • April 10, 2016 at 12:31 pm

The Mercenary works similiarly to the Lightfoot Thief. I’m not a fan of them simply because they proc bondings slower on trash – however on bosses they’re very good and die very often, thus extra bonding procs (I do believe this will get fixed soon, though.) You don’t need the Ioun as it only provides the active bonus, which is in most cases useless, you can replace it.

  • April 10, 2016 at 5:55 am

Love the build been rocking it since lvl 1 and just dinged 70 today on Xbox 1. My only question is how does defense give us more power? The feat that I thought gave us 20% of our defense as power actually says 20% of armor penetration and recovery are given as bonus power. Which would lead me to want to stack arp and recovery and in the process get more power in addition to stacking the obvious of crit chance. Thanks so much for your help!

Great guide! But i still need help, pls tell me:
    1. “wrathful determination” isn’t better passiv than Destroyer or Weapon Master?
    2. which companions is the best at the beginning when i dont have 700k AD for air archont (epic).
    3. Which boons on “The Maze Engine”?
    4. can i turn on Lostmauth’s Horn of Blasting for GWF sigil or sigil is weak?

    • April 11, 2016 at 10:41 pm

      1. It will replace ‘Weapon Master’ once the eLOL set gets nerfed.
      2. You can buy the common and rare versions, they’re much cheaper (of the archons that is.)
      3. I’ll release an update to the guide + the new boons soon.
      4. Stay with the set for now, I’m checking out the Orcus set once it’ll get fixed and won’t do billions of damage.

    April 15, 2016 at 10:33 pm

I’m a 3.3k iL GWF on Xbox and I’ve been playing since launch. I’ve played every build imaginable and my current build is very similar to yours in theory. (I use a tFey and Stack Defense instead of hp) I was toying with the idea of attempting to bring back the old Intimidation build now that we all sit around 40k power. I’m thinking more for PvP. What do you think of a CaGI into Flourish as a 2 shot? Or even a CaGI + Daring Shout for pve as a burst dmg since trash dies so quickly.

    • April 23, 2016 at 2:13 pm

Intimidation is trash and you won’t be able to keep up with the sustainability battle as you rely on 2 encounters and your at-wills will hit like a wet noodle. You won’t be able to 2 shot or 1 shot anything with these two as top tier players have over 150k HP and higher deflect. It’s much less of an option in PVE as well. Most of your damage comes from at-wills, as hybrid/senti you’ll lose all that just for two 20k base hitting encounters that will mostly be flat (post nerf). Much easier to try it out and see how bad it is than to read though, if you’re bored enough you should always try!

With the Lostmouth set getting nerfed, would you stay stick with the set still or swap it to something else?

  • April 23, 2016 at 5:56 pm

Hi Lia! I’ve some questions, I like to know your answer:

    When will you update to mod9 ? Soon ( how soon ) ? ( approximately )

Actually, is better to have azure on offense and radiance on defense ( like you show in this build ), or both with brutal ? There is a difference ?

I’ve an initial roll of 18STR, 15CON, 15DEX, it is good, or I shall use race reroll token to change that initial roll to 18, 12, 18 ?

That’s all for now, thank you. Waiting for your answer 😀

Hey, the answer to your first two question is – I literally just issues an update, as for the Azure vs. Radiant, read up the enchantment section of my guide, it’s updated.
      I’m a heavy min/maxer, so I would race reroll to 18/18/12.

      • April 23, 2016 at 9:58 pm

Thank you. It’s a good built, but I miss weapons master… xD

I’m only 2,2K, and now I don’t know how I could carry out this built from now. From where can I start ? :/…

I play on xbox. I saw that you listed all of your mounts / insignias. Do you get a stacked buff from all your seperate insignia bonuses? Or is it just one selected bonus at a time?

    • April 25, 2016 at 11:59 am

If I understand your questions correctly then yes, I can have 5 different bonuses if I wish to do so, yet the more mounts with the same bonus, the more it stacks and the more you get (in this instance, more stats).

Hi LIa .. firstly thanks for this awesome guide .. i have just started a new GWF char and i am a little confused about with powers i should level up and which ones i should not . .. so i was wondering if u can screenshot ur power window .. thx 🙂

    • April 25, 2016 at 11:58 am

Hi, sadly my power window will not help you since I have most powers on rank 4 and it won’t give you an idea what to level and what not to level. However, in the guide there’s a chart of powers to level, it’s a bold link under the “Powers” section. Moreover, since NWcalc is being a little stupid at times, make sure you level all the powers that are mentioned through the guide.

    Lia, huge fan.
Any thoughts on Steel Blitz as an alternative to Wrathful Determination?
I’ve been testing it since you mentioned that you’ve removed Weapon Master and the weapon damage seems to scale with your self buffs (much like the eLol set in mod 8). The proc rate seems consistent and I was wondering if you had any comparison to Wrathful. I’m not a fan of WD and favour BF over IBS. When Mod 9 drops on XBox and I pick up the Orcus set, I’ll be in a better position to test and compare.

    • April 25, 2016 at 4:29 pm

Hi, thank you! Yes, I did test Steel Blitz, and it has several problems. I can tell you this much – yes, the weapon damage scales similarly to the old Lostmauth set and it adds up nicely, the only problem with slotting it is that with current content, in which it takes exactly half a second to kill a group of mobs, it’ll never proc. Even with 7.5% chance (+offhand feature) it’s not enough to make it as good as the WD DPS boost. WD is great mainly because it empowers the GWF burst a whole lot (you can easily see the numbers increase on IBS for example), however, it takes adjusting and getting used to.

Hello, great build/builds. I am a 3.6k gwf and using your build, it is great! I think the Weapon Master feature may be slightly better still than Wrathful Determination because we still need high crit to use and abuse our high crit severity? I could be wrong I haven’t tested it much as I have only just got my hands on the orcus set.

    • April 26, 2016 at 4:30 pm

Hey, thank you. I wouldn’t be switching to WD if WM was a better option, I think it’s logical 🙂 100% crit chance is not as important as it once was with the lostmauth set, even if you have 95% or a little bit less it’s not crucial whatsoever. Perhaps for lower geared toons that would make a bigger difference and switching to WD can wait.

Hiya just reading your changes for mod 9 in prep for Xbox release. Slightly crying over the Lost set changes but there ya go! While prepping for Orcus, what set would you exchange the Lost set for from the trader when it appears? Black Ice or Tiamat is looking obvious choices as an interim set.

    • April 29, 2016 at 11:12 am

Hey, you shouldn’t exchange your Losty set for anything, keep it til you can get your hands on the Orcus bits.

Thanks much 🙂 just one more if you could? Any room in this build for Thayan Book in the artifact slot? Also axe beak as a mount? (2 I know but am cheeky ;))

        • May 1, 2016 at 4:54 pm

If you want to replace your Lantern for something, it could be the Thayan Book, otherwise I don’t see much use for it. As for Axe Beak, if you already have one then might as well use it, but I wouldn’t recommend buying it specifically, you can get the armpen from other sources.

Hi Lia! Very good build! It helps me a lot 🙂
I want to ask you three things:
    1) What do you think about the idea of keeping the Lostmauth waist and neck instead of the Orcus ones?
    2) What do you think about the idea of replacing the Lostmauth horn with Kessel’s SOA? (breaking the set) Other artifacts are Lantern, Sigil of the controller and Thayan book
    3) Tenser’s Floating Disk with 2’000 Crit or 2’000 Power? My crit is around 13’000, power 15’000
    Thank you 🙂

    • April 29, 2016 at 11:11 am

      1) If you don’t want to equip the Orcus set or don’t have the funds, I’d recommend just keeping the Losty set, it’s still decent, breaking it won’t benifit you.
      2) Look at the above.
      3) If you have a warlock, power > crit in most cases.

to play PvE solo , which spell will give me more strength , soulforged or negation ?

    • May 1, 2016 at 5:00 pm

What strength are we discussing about? It’s entirely related to your skill levels (although I doubt anyone is dying at the current solo PVE content in the game). If you feel comfortable going with a Negation and you don’t die very often/you don’t want to be a reliability on your friends by making them res you every 5 minutes, then sure – by all means go for a Negation.

What reinforcment kits do you use? I currently have 200+ crit on my armor and 100+ AP on my neck, waist and rings. Should I switch them out or keep it?

People has told me stamina ones make determination last longer, is this true?

    • May 1, 2016 at 4:58 pm

Hi. I’m using crit on my armor pieces and stamina regen on my jewellery. However, AP is also fine, you can keep it, it won’t change too much.

    Hi Lia 🙂

Very nice build thanks for sharing! I’ve got a question regargind the insignias. I was wondering if it is a bug or not but, with the insignia bonus i’ve got about 50k power when i’ve got 3 companion stacks, but if I take the insignias down and bonus is not active anymore it is still the same! To be honest i dont exactly remember how much it was before the insignia’s. Am I doing something wrong?

Thanks a lot for the advice 🙂

P.S. Donated a small amount for a new PC 😀

    • May 1, 2016 at 4:57 pm

      Hi, thank you!
What you’re describing doesn’t seem right. How many mounts do you have for the insignia bonus? 4x Camaraderie and 1x Friendship should be around 10 – 11k addition to your power and around half of that to your Defense at BIS levels (ie. r12’s on your companion, etc.)

      • Ksrovsky

Hey just checking were you able to update the calculator? Looking from my phone and PC it is still not showing any points in Wrathful Determination.

        • May 6, 2016 at 3:37 pm

I udpated it, but NWcalc doesn’t seem to show any progressed powers after Hidden Daggers. It’s been like that for a long while and I’m pretty sure there won’t be a fix for that anytime soon. However, I believe anyone who took the time to actually read will have the sense to put points in WD, so I’m not too worried about that.

    May 1, 2016 at 2:42 pm

I have a question because we don’t have it yet on Xbox tell the third. I was looking at your mount setup does it stack properly cause I have been reading on so many post that Protector’s Camaraderie/Friendship: Whenever your companion attacks, it increases your power and defense by 3% for 10 seconds. The bonus stacks up to 4 times and provides a total of 12% power and defense. Each time you stack an additional mount with the bonus, the tooltip adds an additional 4%, but the bonus does not change if you actually test it, so there is no point to stacking this bonus. So I was just wondering if you did all the testing and that it works properly before I get the last couple mounts that I need to get to stack this. Thank you so much and as always your guide is awesome stay classy.

    • May 1, 2016 at 4:55 pm

I was one of the first people to report about the Camaraderie problem, and it has been fixed (the main problem was the actual tooltip, also it gave you extra stats, and it shouldn’t have). It’s working correctly at the moment and it’s giving you a nice addition of around 10k to your power, also plenty of defense (in BIS levels).

    Hi Lia,

Been following the build for sometime. I have made a few adjustments based on play style/ available resources. Can you provide feedback on the following.
    1. Have you tested removing the five points in “Student of the Sword” and putting them in “Relentless Battle Fury”. With our 6k recovery and the application of this feat we have nearly a permanent buff from battle fury.
    2. Currently running two piece master-crafted adamant raid sallet (11589 HP, 683 power, 1026 crit, 825 defense) and adamant raid vambraces. (11589 HP, 1026 power, 684 crit, 825 defense). with Dusk raid scalemail, and dusk raid greaves which have the nice two piece bonus. (5,000 hp, 1000 power, 1000 defense) when in a party. Wouldn’t this current combination be better?

    • May 4, 2016 at 12:03 pm

      1. Yes I did run Relentless Battle Fury for a few weeks, the results are not good and are infact inferior to my original build. It’s very simple – Battle Fury easily gives the illusion of more damage since you’re able to run ahead and kill faster, but you’re easily lacking the IBS burst, no matter what. The lower DPS the rest of the party is, the bigger the impact it seems, but with a competent party you’ll fall behind on damage very quickly.
      2. I don’t bother with the master-crafted items, I don’t think they’re worth the investment as the increase in stats is extremely minor and they don’t interest me with their stat combination. Plus, I’m heavily reliant on armpen ever since I swtiched out, so that would be problematic stats wise.

hello 🙂 great build as soon as i switched to it i was doing tons more dps 🙂 the 1 thing i want to know is that in stats u say deflect is useless in pve but u have 5/5 in scale agility to get a 5% chance to deflect a attack should i put that in unstoppable recovery cuz i never play pvp 🙂 or is deflect used in pve it’s really confusing me lol 🙂 big thanks for the great build 🙂

    • May 6, 2016 at 2:06 pm

Hi, thank you, glad you’re doing well!
Unstoppable recovery is pretty garbage since the healing is extremely minor and won’t (nearly) ever save you from anything. Then again, the extra deflect won’t do much either unless you have higher rates (and in this build, we don’t). So pick your poison, I like the deflect better.

Im trying to understand.. why will you be changing to Fire Archon?

    • June 3, 2016 at 5:42 am

A comment I wrote on a thread in the official forums:

I’m most likely going to swtich to my Fire Archon. When picking a companion, a GWF (at least ones who follow my build or something similiar) should keep in mind they want a companion that:

      – Has a very low cooldown (given Protector’s Camaraderie, it still needs to stack and you want something fast to proc it).
      – Possibly ranged since you’re a melee and you want something that’ll start attacking before you even get to the mob yourself, or just as you get there.
      – Has a good active bonus
      – 3 offense slots

I’m waiting for the new GWF pack companion to make a final decision however, see if the marks are consistent and if it stacks with my own.

This is in relation to the Bonding changes that’ll take place in 4 days in which the bondings will proc just once and there won’t be any stacks anymore.

If you would go with the Fire Archon or something else, then what companion should I get for the bonus effect other than the Zhentarmim Warlock? I currently use Zhentarim warlock, Dancing Blade, Erinyes of belial, Air Archon and Fire Archon (I can’t afford Cambion Magus) should I swap the Zhentarim Warlock for something like the Yeti or the Blink Dog?

Hi Lia, followed the guide for years and love it. I have never questioned using Vorpal enchantments but a TR friend told me he started using Dread for a higher damage output. I was wondering if it would be viable for your build or for a GWF in general.

    • June 13, 2016 at 11:24 pm

Hi. The Dread enchantment is not good for a GWF mainly because most of your damage comes from at-wills and the enchant itself only boosts your encounter damage. Most of your encounters serve to buff your overall damage (including at-wills) and IBS, that’s about that. TR’s a whole different story, however they also do most of their damage from at-wills and bleeds, so Dread isn’t much of a good choice for them either.

June 2016….. just started a GWF (lvl 21 atm only)
I like your setup alot.. its mostly what i figured out myself via the calculator. Ok had some differences of course, but your “do what and why” makes sence, (haha apart from that vorpal stuff. (got a lvl 70 SW and 4 more toons over lvl 60)), but never got a vorpal enchantment on AH or somewhere else. I do admit i didn’t do any campaings much yet on any toon.

My GWF is a Dragonborn (not the expensive one for 6k zen) it works good, but i wanne know what basic powers/feats i need to get i what order (lvl wise f.e to lvl 40).
All i can see (calculator) what one gets per lvl need/must, so to get to the needed stuff is hard to calculate. You got any advice what to take and not get waisted at lvl 40? (As in no “fillers”for powers/feats)

I know im may be “outdated” on the subject, but an answer would be great.

Hello Lia, I have a question about the feats. I noticed that since you switched your slam as a daily, you have student of the sword instead of Battle Awareness for more power. Is it worth having the student of the sword or keep the battle awareness? Thanks

    • June 30, 2016 at 3:48 pm

Hi, sorry for the late answer. The feat is not worth it, the uptime is problematic (even with a build circling around AP + snail, etc.) and the power addition is really not that much.

    June 20, 2016 at 6:09 am

Hey, do you use Brutal’s or Azure’s on your companion’s offence slots?

    • June 30, 2016 at 3:47 pm

Azures, however it’s all situational, one might have more crit naturally than me so they can use Brutals and still reach 100% crit chance.

Hello, wanted to know your opinion on having rank 10, 11, 12 bonding runestones, or having rank 12 x3.

    • July 2, 2016 at 12:50 am

There’s no point in haveing different ranks for bondings anymore. It used to be a thing because the Bondings overstacked and it gave your higher stats, it’s fixed now so there’s no point in it anymore.

    July 3, 2016 at 4:27 pm

    hy Lia,

What do you think about Lillend companion. it has 3 offense and 3 ring slot. i can take it brutality, sudden precision and rising power.

  • Doomhammer
    July 3, 2016 at 9:33 pm

Great guide. Was curious what stones you placed into your companion rings and talisman.

We don’t have those on the Xbox so was curious what you would recommend. I tried the personalised piercing ones but may change to one of the +4 if they stack on a companion if I have the same one equipped(+4 precision)

Also is going all Adamant viable or would it be to much loss on arpen?

    • July 4, 2016 at 12:53 am

Azures in both defense and offense. You can use the adorable bites pieces (don’t remember which lockbox they dropped from), they should be a fair replacement for the Loyal Avenger stuff. Also what do you mean by going all Adamant?

      • Doomhammer
        July 4, 2016 at 1:39 am

As in the adamant raid/assault masterwork armour. I do have the assault arms for the crit atm. I would get an extra 1.5k power and 500 crit but would lose about 1.9k armour pen if I went for all four pieces.

Though to compensate that I could use the rose gold assault rings which give 378 crit 570 armpen per ring.

Not having much luck grinding for the +5 rings I actually need.

I’ll definitely work on aquiring the adorable bites set as they all have offensive slots to stack crit. Feel like I need 1-2k more crit before switching to wrathful determination.

  • July 4, 2016 at 12:46 am

Yo, I heard that there is a companion nerf coming soon. Is that true or no? If so, will have rank 12 bondings effect me? Thanks

    July 7, 2016 at 4:24 am

Hi, wouldn’t it be better to use Dancing Blade rather than Yeti for the extra 5% critical severity, rather than the 10% chance proc for the 10% damage)? I have both, just wondering what your opinion is. Thank you.

Hi Lia. As always, tremendously helpful guides and they’re what really helped me to ultimately decide sticking with my GWF (even after coming back from my 1 Year Haitus!)

My question is, having been gone for a year, several of the “Archon” companions are no longer available in the Zen Market (Xbox One, NA), such as the Fire Archon. With that said, what would be a decent alternative?

I’m currently running an Ion Stone, SW Pack Companion (can’t recall the name), Panther from CotN and Mercenary. I tend to look for new things each paycheck to ultimate help me build towards that end game setup.

Thanks in advance and good luck to you in finding a new PC and Law School!

On PC we have a lot of fire archons on the auction house, and are generally inexpensive. Is that not the case for you guys on XBox?

The XBox economy is horrible, and stuff is REALLY expensive, but, as an XBox player, I do think it’s still worth it to save up for an auction house Fire Archon.

I’ve got to say, this build is very good for beginners and experienced players. Using it so far and its working like a charm. Thank you for putting the effort into making this amazing build.

Hey there, amazing guide you have here. I’ve been referencing to this and the builds been working very well so far. I have a question on the powers though, which are the ones i should max to level 4? Currently i already have hidden daggers and IBS to 4.

Also with the upcoming Storm king mod, is bonding runes still the best option for Companions because i’m thinking of investing in this soon.

    • July 29, 2016 at 1:00 pm

Every single power mentioned in the guide should go to rank 4 as a priority, the rest don’t matter much.
Bondings are still BIS and will be BIS next mod as well.

Hey, [email protected] IIB here. I play a GWF on Xbox. I’ve used this build since my buddy ( [email protected], who runs mad numbers ) pointed me your way. My question is: Should I hold on to the Lostmauth set just incase, or Commit to the Orcus now?

    • July 29, 2016 at 12:59 pm

Hey, losty set is obsolete, no point in hanging onto it.

Thanks for letting me know! Btw, my whole guild is debating whether you’re maile or female. Please help me end this???

        • August 11, 2016 at 3:56 am

I hope there are better debates going on in your guild than my gender lmao. I’m a girl/chick/female.

There are.lol We just brokered a great alliance. I’ve only met one person who has managed to not adopt your build, and I’m certain she will have to respec in order to compete with the rest of our GWF circle. My hat is off to you Lia, you rock! Thanks for settling the debates. I’ll enjoy saying I was right.

Hello, I just made critical kits for my dragonflight gear but wanted to know if I make it elemental, will the kits be removed?

Hey nice guide I just got the game for ps4 and just finished the elemental evil campaign. Was using laz’s guidr and I have been following it to a t but I noticed it’s mod 6 so the main question I have is why not use weapon mastery now and use wrathful instead is it that much of a dmg boost?

    • July 31, 2016 at 9:59 am

Taken directly from the guide, I suggest you read a bit more.
“We don’t need the 100% crit chance anymore, it’s nice to have but not necessary as we don’t depend on one artifact set to be 30% of our damage, hence why I switched out Weapon Master for Wrathful Determination.”

How did you skip the middle tier in your paragon feats, do you have to reach L70 and respec?

can i get a screen shot of your powers please as the link not working for me

    • August 11, 2016 at 4:01 am

I’m on vacation and won’t be able to provide a screenshot for a good while, I suggest you follow the build and all powers that I mentioned throughout, make sure there are points in there, the other powers don’t really matter.

Just wondering your thoughts on the new Lions, either mounts or companion? The companion lion could be a replacement for the Blink Dog?

  • August 10, 2016 at 6:38 pm

Hey, any tips on the new campaign and your opinion with a fury build SW? Thanks.

    • August 11, 2016 at 3:57 am

Eh, I’m not a warlock so I have no idea. New campaign is very simple and includes daily quests like any other campaign in this game, not much to tip about. Don’t die!

Im new to the game. Strength is the primary ability why roll 16 and 16 (+2)dex, and not 18 Strength and 16 dex? Thanks a lot!

I just started the game and found this guide and it’s helped me alot decide what i want to build towards, that brings me into my question. Is this guide still the main guide? I play on playstation and made a human GWF. I did alot of mistakes aswell so i plan on buying a retraining scroll or whatever it was called.
